*sigh*
The year is 2010 and this stuff still goes on....and on....and on.... If you're old enough to read you're old enough to read. That is the only law of what should and shouldn't be read. |

What a dilemma! How can the kids possibly avoid the awful sin of sodomy if no one's allowed to tell them what it is!
Prudes. Sheesh! If a kid's old enough to ask the question, they're old enough to know the answer. Better they should learn it from Mr. Webster than from their pals at the playground. Last edited by WT Sharpe; 01-26-2010 at 10:50 AM. |

Huh, that's rather surprising that this happened in California of all states. Sounds like a overprotective parent whose going to probably raise the worst adult in the last 20 years.

Wow - while I dont find it surprising that someone complained. It boggles the mind that someone actually said "I know, we'll remove the dictionaries from the classroom." and not only did they think it was a good idea, but no one else called them a fraking idiot.
I know what this will lead to next though - children's dictionaries being marketed to all the schools. |

What a good idea. The curious 9 year old kids will get a much better answer of what it is when they look it up on the internet instead.

The result is that the number of kids with STD's is growing alarmingly, and many kids develop an extremely unhealthy relationship to sexuality, open for abuse and unaware that real love can be a part of the deal, too. Fine, I'm a little , but I feel so concerned! |

Exactly. Just for curiosity's sake, I typed "oral sex" into google. The first hit was a summary of news articles containing "oral sex", the second was a link to the definition of "oral sex" on Wikipedia. It has an illustration to go with the definition. Yep, that's SO much better than just reading it in a dictionary.

The Dictionary simply reflects a society's standards as expressed through it's language. It makes sense if we keep lowering our moral standards, a dictionary should follow. It shouldn't be any other way. If we think this is shocking... just wait, we ain't seen nothin' yet. The dictionary of tomorrow is sure to contain terms that we can't even imagine or fathom.

Really scary that we are still sensoring in this way.
Not sure what's happening in other countries, but in Australia the teenage pregnancies are going up. Hope they removed the computers, library cards, TVs and Newspaper as well. Just to be on the sure side. I always thought, that kids will start looking for stuff when they are old enough to be interested. |

I'm not sure what's worse: Outright banning Sex-ed, or the "abstinence-only" curriculum popular in many US school districts. |
