I got 25 years before worrying about retirement. But what will I do when the time comes, I don't know. Ponder forthcoming death, question the point of life, the universe, all that stuff.

I joined a rock 'n roll band playing saxophone, also do a lot of work with a big band and help out with some very enthusiastic teenage musicians. I have also now joined an orchestra to get my clarinet playing back to some level of competence. I am now doing publicity for a music festival and various web pages etc. Oh - and I am also doing a degree at university (but I started before I retired). In my spare time I have started remodeling the garden and also belong to several specialist gardening clubs.
Retire? How did I ever find the time to work?
The secret is to start getting active in some interests before you retire, not after.

I didn't know Maurice Chevalier knew sign language. Does the ASL version of the song include lewd gestures? Or is that the George Carlin version?

This month I am five years from full retirement at 60 and so figuring out what is going to get me out of bed that next morning is a serious question I have to answer soon. Will I have something to retire to (instead of just from)? Or will I just lay around and let whatever happens happen (gawd, I hope not). I need a plan and I need to start making one now. Nothing grandiose. Just something to keep me engaged.

Hey, pshwynkies, you really gonna walk me every day when you retire? I'd happily jump in your pool for a ball. Willya? Huh?

Sure, but you're going to have to get used to IceBox winters until we move to the Caribbean.

One of the most important things is to stay fit. Plan on hitting gym six days a week. It's important when you're young but mandatory when you're over 50. Best book on the subject is Younger Next Year by Chris Crowley and Harry Lodge. Very informative and very motivating.

They also wrote a follow on book called Younger Next Year for Women which I've not read but which I assume covers the details the first book did plus hormonal issues.

Interesting questions.

I've been a stay-at-home Dad for a little more than 20 years. In a few weeks my youngest will be going off to college and I will be making the transition from "stay-at-home Dad" to merely unemployed.

And a couple weeks after that I will turn 60.

I would love to go back to work -- and with 2 kids in college I have plenty of incentive -- but given my age, interrupted work history and the current state of the economy ... finding a job's going to be a challenge.

In the meantime, as homework and after school driving demands have lessened, I've had a little more time to read! I also do some volunteer work at a local hippotherapy center.

Also, I had some short stories published back in the 70s. I'm getting them up on the web as ebooks ... and I've started writing some new ones.

Maybe, if I can get a job, I'll be able to contemplate retirement at 85.
