The Nightmare Before Christmas (with apologies to the Master!)

'twas the night ere Christmas
when she crept down the stair.
the clock struck eight,
she saw stockings on the grate.
she stood bewildered, with a stare......
as the oldies were there -
"too early it is,
come on my dear lass,
back up that stair".

'twas the night afore Christmas
when she crept down the stair.
the clock struck ten,
she was too early, again.
she saw in the sitting room
all the grownups still there
"too early it is,
come on my dear lass,
back up that stair".

*

'twas the night 'ere Christmas
when she crept down the stair.
the clock struck mid-night
and the moon shone bright.
it was ghostly and chill
and all was so still,
but she could see.....
her eyes did not deceive,
for beneath the tree,
the floor was bare.

'twas the night a'fore Christmas
when she crept down the stair.

her eyes they deceived her,
did they not ?

for beneath the tree,
......the floor was bare.

......nothing there !

'twas the night of Christmas
when she crept up the stair.
with tears in her eyes
she thought "no lies,
have I told this year;
apart from that one, and that one,
oh! and that whopper there".

*

'twas the night of Christmas
when she crept down the stair.
the clock struck three
and there beneath her favourite tree,
she looked and she looked,
but
the floor was still ----
bare !

'twas the night of Christmas
when she crept up the stair.
with tears in her eyes
she stifled her cries,
as she flopped onto her bed
and punched dear Teddy....
not fair Teddy !
not fair !

*

'twas the night of Christmas
when she stayed up the stair.
with tears in her eyes
she stifled those cries,
I've been good all last year,
well,
mostly,
apart from ....
and ....
oh! and .....

*

'twas the morning of Christmas
when she stole late down the stair.

the oldies were up
but she did not care.

they'd forgotten 'twas Christmas
...... the awful pair!

'twas a nightmare she declared !
...
...
...
...
and then she stared
out the window
to see ....
a big red bow
tied
around the slender neck of
a beautiful
anthracite-coloured
.....mare.....

Christmas

there's more to Christmas than mistletoe and wine,
it's a season of cold; but a reason for cheer,
in the knowledge we have, that all is fine.

it's a time for joy, for living, for giving, and a sweet scent of pine;
it's a season for song and jugs of beer,
but there's more, though; to Christmas, than mistletoe and wine.

at the close of a year, it's a step from the line,
it's season for togetherness and banish of fear
in the knowledge we have, that all is now fine.

the kings and the shepherds came unto a sign,
bringing gifts from afar, and thoughts held dear;
there's more, then, to Christmas than mistletoe and wine.

from me and from mine,
we bid you a good cheer,
in the knowledge we have, that all will be fine.

up above in the wide heavens the stars do shine,
whilst here in our homes, there's no cause for a tear,
because there's more to Christmas than mistletoe and wine,
and in the knowledge we have, that all is fine.
