They're in the worst of both worlds. Always have their hopes dashed, and have wasted time/money/effort preparing for a bunch of stuff that never happens...

So we have an individual whose hopes are continually dashed, and see wastage as positive. I foresee one of three possibilities: 1: extensive psychiatric treatment, or 2: foreclosure due to lack of funds from overspending on unnecessary items, or 3: they are an economist.
