I reinstalled 3.17. Has the same problem. Installed 3.18. Same problem. So I am back on 3.16.
3.16 does take longer to load that I remember, but not nearly as long as 3.17 or 3.18. It's probably something with Windows 10. Not my favorite 'service.' Once any version is finally loaded everything is fine. Linux is starting to look better every day. ~Dave |

Try temporarily disabling your antivirus and seeing if it makes a difference (disconnect from the internet first).

Try overriding what Temp directory Calibre is using via the Environment variable CALIBRE_TEMP_DIR.
Https://manual.calibre-ebook.com/customize.html#id1 The purpose of the above would be to ensure that any aggressive file cleaner that you run automatically is not deleting newly created Calibre temporary files. Calibre Version 3.17 had the change "Store temporary files used by the editor and viewer in the cache directory to try to prevent errors caused by 'file cleaner' programs deleting temporary files still in use", but you have not mentioned either the editor or the viewer. You also have not indicated whether or not you are running as an Administrator or User. DaltonST Last edited by DaltonST; 02-25-2018 at 03:03 PM. Reason: More Info. |

I've not seen Calibre 3.17 take longer to load than 3.16.
I'm using Windows 10 Home 64-bit on my laptop with 8GB of ram. I'm using Calibre 64-bit. What is your setup that's acting up? |

You debug log is abnormal in that if were not manually edited by you personally prior to posting, it appears that Calibre began to start, and then started over from the beginning. See the extract of your log below. However, if you did redact it, you really need to attach the original debug log from a single execution of Calibre with debug turned on.
Code:
calibre Debug log calibre 3.17 [64bit] embedded-python: True is64bit: True Windows-10-10.0.16299-SP0 Windows ('64bit', 'WindowsPE') ('Windows', '10', '10.0.16299') Python 2.7.12+ Windows: ('10', '10.0.16299', 'SP0', u'Multiprocessor Free') Interface language: None Successfully initialized third party plugins: DeDRM (6, 5, 3) && Find Duplicates (1, 6, 3) && Audit Log (1, 0, 8) && EpubMerge (2, 1, 1) && Quality Check (1, 9, 11) && Barnes & Noble (1, 2, 14) && Goodreads (1, 1, 13) && Reading List (1, 6, 6) && Count Pages (1, 8, 0) && Goodreads Sync (1, 11, 0) calibre 3.17 [64bit] embedded-python: True is64bit: True Windows-10-10.0.16299-SP0 Windows ('64bit', 'WindowsPE') ('Windows', '10', '10.0.16299') Python 2.7.12+ Windows: ('10', '10.0.16299', 'SP0', u'Multiprocessor Free') Interface language: None Successfully initialized third party plugins: DeDRM (6, 5, 3) && Find Duplicates (1, 6, 3) && Audit Log (1, 0, 8) && EpubMerge (2, 1, 1) && Quality Check (1, 9, 11) && Barnes & Noble (1, 2, 14) && Goodreads (1, 1, 13) && Reading List (1, 6, 6) && Count Pages (1, 8, 0) && Goodreads Sync (1, 11, 0) |

↑ ↑ ↑ - yeah I noticed that too. I wondered if it was something to do with autostarting the Version 3.x server, which is something I don't do.
@K8HW - Did you try DaltonST's suggestions in post#19, Your problem has the hallmarks of a 3rd party program 'intervening', if you haven't already done so, try one or both of these techniques to isolate the culprit:

Apparently the problem is Windows 10. (big surprise) The log file was NOT edited. I have included a recent log file. It shows the same stuff. Now I have a ridiculous observation. Calibre starts every time in under 3 seconds if I have the Windows 10 stopwatch running in order to time Calibre. Makes absolutely no sense. If I don't have the stop watch running Calibre takes close to three minutes to start. ~Dave EDIT. I have included the startup log (BAD Calibre log,txt) for when Calibre takes 87 seconds to start up. Look nearly identical to me! Last edited by K8HW; 02-26-2018 at 04:45 PM. |

Do you have the splash screen enabled and does it make a difference if you disable it in Preferences->Look & feel

I did some tests - following is what is logged if I use Preferences->Restart in debug mode.

The double startup output in the gui debug log is normal, it's an artifact of how debug restarts work.

I've also added some more debug prints to the startup code, which should give us some more info on what exactly is taking so much time. If I had to guess, I'd guess it is that the startup uses a 1 millisecond single-shot timer to proceed with initialization, I suspect for some reason that timer is hanging on K8HW's system, this would explain why it doesn't happen when running the windows stopclock.
