Buchclub Extra: Die lange Erde von Terry Pratchett & Stephen Baxter

Im November laden wir euch zu einem weiteren Buchclub-Extra ein: The Long Earth (dt. Die lange Erde) von Terry Pratchett und Stephen Baxter.

Terry Pratchett ist den meisten sicher von seinen Scheibenwelt-Romanen bekannt, Stephen Baxter schreibt das, was gemeinhin als "harte Science-Fiction" bezeichnet wird.

Als ich vor fast drei Jahren gehört habe, Pratchett und Baxter hätten gemeinsam einen Roman geschrieben, der im Sommer 2012 erscheinen sollte, hat mich das unendlich neugierig gemacht. Diese beiden Autoren waren für mich, was ihre Art zu schreiben angeht, ungefähr so weit voneinander entfernt wie der Nordpol vom Südpol oder wie die "Datum Earth" (unsere Erde) in ihrem Buch von der am weitesten entfernten, zu der Joshua und Lobsang, die Protagonisten von The Long Earth, im Verlauf der Geschichte reisen.

Ein unvorstellbares, einfach zu gegensätzliches Autorengespann also? Ja und nein, denn es hat - zumindest aus meiner Sicht - gut funktioniert. Das Buch ist eine gelungene Mischung aus den Stilen beider Autoren, wobei weder der eine noch der andere mir dominant zu sein schien. Natürlich ist man geneigt, die Erfindung des Steppers, des Hightech-Geräts, das es erlaubt, sich zwischen den Welten zu bewegen, Pratchett zuzuschreiben, wobei ich jedoch ziemlich sicher bin, dass Baxter diese Kartoffel (!) mit den benötigten physikalischen Eigenschaften ausgestattet hat.

Das Thema der Parallelwelten und Paralleluniversen findet sich bei Baxter, der von Hause aus Physiker ist, immer wieder, und auch Pratchetts Scheibenwelt könnte man ohne Probleme in einem Paralleluniversum ansiedeln, in dem die Welten nicht rund, sondern eben flach sind, und auf dem Rücken von Schildkröten durch Raum und Zeit driften.

Die lange Erde eröffnet der Menschheit bisher ungeahnte Möglichkeiten, denn diese Parallelerden sind alle menschenleer. Und darum geht es in diesem Buch: Ist es noch nötig, sich um Ressourcen zu streiten, wenn diese im nächsten (übernächsten usw.) Universum völlig unverbraucht jedem zur Verfügung stehen, der über ein Exemplar besagter Kartoffel verfügt? Kann es da noch eng für die Menschheit werden?

Das letzte Wort darüber wird in diesem Buch allerdings nicht gesprochen, da es der erste Band einer fünfteiligen Reihe ist (ihr seid also gewarnt), von der bisher die ersten drei Bände erschienen sind.

Gelesen werden kann wie immer wahlweise deutsch oder englisch, wir freuen uns über jeden Mitleser, der gewillt ist, sich auf dieses Science-Fiction-Roadmovie einzulassen.

Hi, schöne Idee an und für sich, aber...

Ich habe das Buch erst vor zwei Monaten durch und so nett ich es auch fand ist mein TBR Stapel zu gross um es mir direkt wieder vorzunehmen. Daher setze ich diesmal ausnahmsweise aus

@ troll05, das ist schade. Bei mir ist es zwei Jahre her, und ich will endlich die Serie weiterlesen und auf diese Art mein Gedächtnis auffrischen.

Aber wenn es bei dir erst 2 Monate her ist, ist es ja noch frisch, vielleicht kannst du trotzdem etwas dazu sagen?

Ich sehe es, wie Marrella, wäre doch ganz schön, wenn du dann auch noch etwas dazu schreibst.

Ich kenne es noch nicht, habe aber die ersten beiden Teile bereits bei einer Aktion gekauft. Ich bin schon sehr gespannt!

Öhm, ich wollte in das Buch nur mal kurz reinschauen und habe dann gleich ein paar Kapitel gelesen.

Es gefällt mir bisher sehr gut, hoffe es bleibt auf diesem Niveau.

Ich habe heute Morgen angefangen und inzwischen auch ein paar Kapitel gelesen - es gefällt mir sogar noch besser als beim ersten Mal. Das kann aber auch daran liegen, dass ich es nun gemütlich auf dem Kindle lesen kann, statt ein Stück toten Baum aus der Bibliothek in der Hand zu haben.

Ich muss mich im Hinblick auf meine Einleitung auch etwas korrigieren: Ich finde, am Anfang spürt man deutlich Pratchetts "Handschrift". Dieser trockene britische Humor ist einfach nur herrlich.

Ich bin am Wochenende nicht weitergekommen, habe aber vorhin wieder angefangen. Es gefällt mir ausgesprochen gut, gerade weil man so gar nicht weiß in welche Richtung sich die Geschichte weiterentwickeln wird.

Ich bin jetzt etwa bei 25%.

Ob Lobsang gefährlich ist? Seit HAL in 2001 ist man ja bei künstlichen Intelligenzen immer etwas vorsichtig.

Es macht Spaß, bin begeistert! Ich habe aber von vielen offenen Geschichten gelesen, also vermutlich endet es mit riesigen Cliffhangern.

Man sollte nicht vergessen, dass es Teil 1 von 5 ist. Aber wenn ich mich recht erinnere, ist der Cliffhanger am Schluss nicht ganz so schlimm.

So offen war es wohl nicht, sonst hätte ich längst weitergelesen. Es ließ halt einfach nur Raum für "mehr".

Es gab ja auch so eine kleine Spitze gegen das elektronische Lesen.

Ich überlege seit dem ich das Buch lese, wie viel Eisen in unseren Readern ist. Kann man die vielleicht auch ohne bauen, damit man sie in die anderen Welten mitnehmen kann. Solarmodule zum Aufladen wären vielleicht auch eine Möglichkeit.

Wie wäre es mit einem Reader, der ein Alu-Unibody-Gehäuse hat? Das müsste doch gehen?

Und ich amüsiere mich gerade köstlich über die singenden "Russen". Wieder mal ein Beispiel für mein schreckliches Gedächtnis, was Details angeht.
