Apple iPad to get OLED screen.

Hello all,

Just read an article over on TheRegister.

Looks like the Apple iPad will be getting an OLED screen, and due to this won't be available until the second half of 2010.

Crazy price estimate though. $2000!

Here is the link

It's not that crazy, considering the price of OLEDs. Wasn't that Sony 11" OLED TV selling for something like $2,500?

Could the moderators create a new forum called "Rumors/speculation" for posts such as this? Speculation about the non-existent Apple tablet has been going on for years, and it's getting a bit tedious.

With Microsoft Courier, CrunchPad, and to a lesser extent Kindle DX and the Que coming out, you don't think Apple will get involved in tablet computing?

There have been tablets in the market for a while. Look at how they abandoned the PDA market, and let Palm and others rule. People have been clamoring for a tablet for years from them, and they've continually refused to make one. I don't think they'll be making one any time soon.

Apple abandoned the Newton because it was John Sculley's baby and not Teh Steve's. Simple as that. A few years later they turned around and introduced the iPhone/iPod Touch PDA platform because it was Steve's idea.

If Steve wants it, he'll make Apple make it. Including a super-expensive OLED model is the sort of G4 Cube madness that sometimes pays off for Apple. It's all dependent on whether they can work out a subscription platform for it.

Actually, this makes some sense.

Apple has innovative design and innovative UI. But it also employs new technology at times, to better differentiate its products -- look at how it "cornered" the market for the iPod high capacity drives.

I would have been a little surprised (and disappointed,) if the iPad used the same (or marginally better) screen technology, as the myriad cheap netbooks.

But if Apple can use OLED, particularly in a subsidized product, retailing at under $1000 with contract, then its tablet will be truly unique, and it will most likely sell well.

OLED would, among other things, also help solve the battery issue, which has reportedly been one of Jobs' main reasons for not such tablet see the light of day.

Boo, 2nd half of 2010 huh. Well I am giving Apple till Feb 2010 because by then we will probably see a Kindle 3 and that will be my next upgrade. I love my iPhone and the step to a tablet seems obvious and logical to everyone except for Apple.

One theory I'd believe is that Apple couldn't talk sense into the publishers and realised selling ebooks electronically is a drama and best left to niche products like the Kindle/Nook.

More likely that with the continuing increase in the popularity of netbooks that they just don't see a gap in the market between smartphones and laptops that would allow them to sell a product with a large enough profit margin, especially in the uncertain economic situation we have currently and the current costs, performance and power considerations of the available screen technologies.

I'm very sceptical when it comes to an Apple tablet. What on earth should it be used for?

Who cares, It's Apple and it WILL be shiny, oh yes, it will be shiny...

As for use, what do people use tablet-PC's for? Should be about the same.

But shiny!

Precisely.

The one thing Apple craves is to create its own niche. If there's one thing that's certain, it's that the Apple tablet will be a device rather than a computer. It will be an expensive, distinctive, shiny status item.

Take into account the fact that Apple is perhaps the only large computer company that maintained significant rises in sales and profits throughout the recession, largely based on iPhone revenues.

Second half of 2010? So all those October release date whisperings that we were hearing about since late last year were right -- they just had the wrong year.
