The Winds of Dune - Brian Herbert
A book for fan of Dune. "The Winds of Dune" by Brian Herbert (Frank's Son), and Kevin Anderson takes place after Paul walks off into the desert at the end of "Dune Messiah". As such, it's not quite as satisfying for someone who hasn't read that part of the series in over 20 years.
I realize that there are those who think that any Dune book not written by Franks is but a pale imitation. Maybe so. But, then again, it's a book in the Duniverse about characters we've come to know and love. As such, I've enjoyed all the prequel and post-series books. As a book that falls in the middle of the main series....I really think one should read it "in place" and not by itself. The book wrestles with, but does not answer "how can Paul be a good man, carry on the Atriedes honor code, and still be the leader of a murderous jihad that kills billions and even sterilizes a number of worlds". It's a good question and about the only answer we have is "Paul sees things we don't see". If you aren't a Dune fan, you have no need to read this book. If you are a Dune fan, perhaps it's a good time to go back and reread Dune, and the following books, with this one in it's order right after "Dune Messiah". Lee |
