How Long Does Calibre Conversion Really Take?

Hey Guys,

Please help me? I am busy converting an EPUB to a MOBI file on Calibre. The size of the file is 118MB. I just need to know how long it will take. It has been showing 67% for the last 28 days? Can this be? Any suggestions?

As a test, I just converted 138MB EPUB to 162MB MOBI. Took about 8 minutes.

Open Task Manager on your PC. Check the "Applications" tab and see if calibre's status is "running". Then check "Processes" tab and see if calibre's "Working Memory" slowly changes if you watch it for a few seconds. If no signs of life, your conversion has died. Use Task Manager to stop the hung-up process.

Try again ... if it takes more than a couple hours to convert: forget it! Read the book as an EPUB!

You'd be better off converting to KF8 (AZW3).

The size of the file is not that relevant; rather the internal coding is key, and how many links exist.

Some items like dictionaries and Bibles are basically impossible to convet

I would use the "Modify EPUB" plug-in to clean and standardize the file before attempting to convert it again.

Another clue that the file has a problem is if you try to "Embed Metadata", and it fails. The Modify EPUB plug-in for me always fixes whatever problem caused the Embed Metadata function to fail.

You're right. (As usual )

Tried to convert a 62MB EPUB (The World Almanac 2017) to MOBI and it died with a "Memory Error" after about two hours. I was watching it struggle in Task Manager and my old Vista PC finally said "enough"!!

An EPUB twice the size had no problems. Hmm ... so size really doesn't matter.

Fortunately, I don't "Kindle" and have no need to convert to MOBI; but this was an interesting test.

But were you using a 32-bit Calibre? If so, that would be why the memory error.

Running 32-bit calibre 2.85.1 on 32-bit Vista PC. I'm a 32-bit dinosaur in a 64-bit Windows world.

Not really ... I was able to convert a 138MB EPUB to MOBI in about 8 minutes and it did not fail ... nary a stutter or stammer.
