Calibre content server eReader not saving highlights

Hi All - I recently stood up a new Ubuntu server instance of calibre-server to serve up my collection of 1,000 books over the web. Everything is working perfect except for one thing -- The web based reader will not save highlights!

I can highlight text, but when I close the book and reopen it, the highlights are gone.

Here is the contents of my calibre-server conf file -- any input is appreciated!

-----------------------------------------

## startup service
[Unit]
Description=calibre content server
After=network.target

[Service]
Type=simple
User=dave
Group=dave
ExecStart=/usr/bin/calibre-server /mnt/external/Dropbox/Libraries/Books --enable-local-write --enable-auth

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

When you create a highlight you then need to use Sync to save th highlight to the server.

The Sharing over the net preference has a Require username and password to access the content server for which the tooltip states "It is also needed for some features such as making any changes to the library as well as last read position/annotation syncing."

I found it in the preferences section and checked the box, but in the caliber-server config, as you can see, that was already enabled.

I will say that the desktop reader save highlights no problem, its the web reader that is giving me problems.

I also found a preference in the desktop reader miscellaneous section to save annotations to the epub files for easy sharing. I checked that box as 100% of my books are epubs. However, the web reader has no such option.

Out of curiosity, where are highlights stored when they are made in the web reader? Within the epub file itself or in the database somewhere?

Incredibly, it is working now. The only thing I changed was checking the box that said require authentication in order to save annotations. It seemed to me odd that I would have needed to check this box in the desktop content server preferences when I am running the separate calibre-server program that was already configured to require authentication. Does the calibre-server program and the desktop program share the same preferences? Apparently so....
