How many e-book readers do you own?
I notice a lot of forum members own numerous e-book readers, why? Is it just a collecting thing or is there a practical reason?

Personally, I own 2. For years, I thought I couldn't justify a 2nd one, even though the new features often tempted me. If I hadn't been able to use a collection of gift cards for the 2nd ereader, I might still only have 1. But the reason I like having 2 is that I use one at home (Kobo Aura One), which is a much larger ereader, so good for at home, plus it has better features for reading in the dark/evening (comfort light pro), which was always a problem for me with my original ereader. Then, the other reader (kobo glo) I use when I'm out and about. It's 7 years old, and wasn't as expensive to start with, so I would be less heartbroken if it was broken, lost or stolen. It has a recessed screen and a solid cover, so I'm also less worried it will break.
But that really is just one scenario. There are a lot of reasons people have multiple ereaders, mine being possibly the stingiest of them all :-p |

I own a Kobo Aura H2O, 2 Sony Reader PRS-T1, a Sony Reader PRS-650, a nook ST, a Kindle Touch, and a Kindle PW3.
One T1 and the Kindles came from family. Last edited by JSWolf; 10-20-2019 at 11:40 AM. |

I have a 2018 Kindle Oasis, and the newest Paperwhite. I bought the Paperwhite to take on a beach vacation this past summer. I traded in an old 2nd gen Kindle, and got a 25% discount, and it was on sale too, so the prices was very reasonable.
I love them both, and switch between them. The Oasis battery isn't great, and the form factor a tad too wide for my taste, but the larger screen is great. I could do without the page turn buttons. The battery life of the Paperwhite is much better, but the screen light isn't as bright, which is sometimes an issue for me due to eyesight issues. Hubby uses a 2nd gen Paperwhite and his quite happy with it. We have several iDevices as well. |

The good thing about ereaders is that they have a much longer life than smartphones and tablets, so I keep my older models around because I can always find some use for them. My first Kobo Glo (2012), which was a present, I passed along to my mother who is still using it happily. The H2O I bought new (2014) when it was released and I still keep it around for the external SD card (which is useful for manga): I can't sell it because I opened it up to change the internal SD card and it probably wouldn't fetch a good price as it is. The Glo HD (2016, maybe?) I bought used on ebay for a good price and has been (and still is) my main 6" ereader, and the only one I take out of the house for commuting etc. The Libra I bought as an upgrade for the H2O. |

Let's see.
Kobo Touch, Kobo Mini, Kobo Aura One, Kobo Glo HD, Kobo Clara HD, Kindle Touch, Kindle Paperwhite 2, Kindle Paperwhite 3, Kindle Oasis 2 and Cervantes BQ. Also a Fire HD 8 tablet and a Pixel 3 phone. So that's 12 reading devices, 10 eink ereaders. Why do I keep them? Well I got rid of my first, a Kindle 2i and always regretted it. Because I think it would have been nice to still have my original ereader. I'm also sentimental about my Mini because it's a reader I really like and you can't really get 5" readers any more. I have gotten rid of a few ereaders but I'm at the point where most of my family don't want cast offs any more and you don't really get much for them second hand. They don't take up much space and I can allocate them for different purposes. I have one that stays in my work desk drawer, one that I carry in my backpack, a PW downstairs and one in the bedroom and so on. I do try to resist buying every new model but sometimes I am tempted. So I just shrug and call myself a collector |

Currently the Kobo Forma and the original H2O
Previously I’ve concurrently owned every Nook eink device from when the nook Simple Touch was introduced up to the one just before they broke away from the form factor I can’t recall the name and their naming system is almost as idiotic as the people ultimately in charge of the Nook. The original Kobo H2O, the Kobo Aura One, and the Kobo Forma. As to why each brought something to the table I wanted more than the previous one. I have since rehomed the various Nooks to people I don’t really like but had to pretend to like, and the Kobo Aura One to an aunt and uncle. |

"Well, if you're going to get a Sony PRS-650 you've got to have a silver one, a red one and a black one, you know. Ditto for the PRS-300 and..." I've got way too many eReaders and a bunch of them are going to go to eBay, or Craigslist, or... (No one in my family wants any and keeping them all charged is a pain.) I honestly don't know how many eReaders I currently have. But I'll have far fewer by the end of the year. I don't have any current models of anything (now that Tolino upgraded their models) and the only eReader I bought new was my original Nook Simple Touch (and it was on a Black Friday sale). |

Three:
Kobo Mini - first and beloved Aura H2O - hand-me-down upgrade, currently on the healing bench Clara HD - to replace the temporarily unavailable Aura H2O I don't buy them for fun, but have a requirement for at least one working one, preferably with frontlight. |

Four in active use (I switch between them) - Kindle Oasis 2017 and 2019, Nook Glowlight Plus 2019, Kobo Libra. I also have a Kindle Voyage which I rarely use but can't bring myself to sell, and two old basic Kindles from 2011 and 2012, which I no longer use but haven't sold for sentimental reasons (they were my first ereaders).
Sold my Oasis 2016 and Kindle Basic 2014. Do I need so many ereaders? Of course not. It's pure gadget lust, I have no excuses. And it's MobileRead's fault I'm an ereader addict now. |

I've got three currently ~ Kobo Clara HD, Kobo Glo & an old Pocketbook 360+. I've kept (but rarely use) the old Pocketbook purely as it was so compact, had a hard cover and at the time was one of the few eReaders that could read both prc & epub (less relevant now with Calibre about). The Glo has a slightly temperamental on/off switch but otherwise is fine for travel use. The Clara I use when I'm at home. I've gone through a number of others too over the years but I've worn them out or knackered them

(4) Voyages, Paperwhite 2, Paperwhite 3, Basic 10, Basic 8, (2) Basic 7, Touch, Kindle 5, (4) Kindle keyboards, NookGlo3, (4) Fire 7, (2) Fire 8, Fire HDX, Nook HD+. Paperwhite 3 is actually for my Mom, but she decided to keep her Paperwhite 1.
So that's 17 ereaders and 8 tablets. Gadget addiction mostly, Woot.com order mistake and loss of 2 family members. While I love my Voyages, I also love my clicky keys, hence the large accumulation of both buttons and touch screens. It's hard to give up something that works well. Funny how this happened. I only had a Kindle Voyage, Keyboard and Nook ST a few years ago. As to how they are currently used: Voyage 1 - main ereader; sits by my reading chair Voyage 2 - upstairs ereader Voyage 3 - Entire Kobo library Voyage 4 - book club reads (this one is new to me) NookGlo3 - Entire B&N library Keyboard 1 - Murder she wrote series Keyboard 2 - Xanth series (I listen text-to-speech while washing dishes) Keyboard 3 - Library reads Paperwhite 2 - Magazine collection (lightspeed, asimov) Touch - editing ebooks converted from p-books. Highlight feature works best on this one Basic 7-1 - Attached to brother's account Basic 10 - my current take-a-long Dare I say I also have a collection of Apple ithings for audiobooks? 2 nanos, 2 Itouchs, Echos and now an Iphone. I bought my Kindle Paperwwhite in February 2017, then I wanted something with a bigger screen so in July 2018 I bought a Kobo Aura One that now is my favorite reader.

To be honest, I might want one more. But until then, my H2O is still good. I don't use any of the others besides the H2O. I do sometimes use my iPhone or iPad. |
