Black Library? Any Warhammer fans here?

About this time last year I was looking for a new hobby. I was sick of spending all my free time gazing at a PC screen playing The Lord of the Rings Online- a game that requires a lot of your time. I wanted to do something more hands on and creative. I was reading G.R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series at the time and was lurking about on one of the many associated forums on the subject when I noticed a link to Dark Sword Miniatures who make 28mm miniatures modeled on the characters from the books. I had a look and liked what I saw mainly due to as a youth I collected similar miniatures by a company called Citadel. I had a little insight as to what was involved as the miniatures require some assembly and painting- perfect I thought- this could well be my new hobby! I sent of to Germany for some of the Game of Thrones figures and visited my local Games Workshop (who own Citadel miniatures) and bought some paints and basic equipment. While in the store and chatting with the manager I quickly grew an interest in the grim dark universe of Warhammer 40,000 and began building an army to play in the tabletop game and reading the Games Workshop books from their own publishing house Black Library. I find it an all round hobby being creative, modeling and painting my army of Space Marines doing some socialising playing the game at my local Games Workshop and local friendly gaming store Coliseum Rex and now at home with new friends. Inbetween all this I am currently reading The Horus Heresy series of books - there are a lot! Anyone else share my passion for all things 40K?

Sounds like you have found some interesting synergy between reading and gaming. Last year I tried to get my teenage son interested in the Warhammer figures and games but ultimately the PS4 won the battle for his time and attention. Good luck with your new.passion .

Yes, I play them for like 25 years (on and off, but since 5 years regulary again). Lorewise 40k is very interesting. I read a few books (the quality differs). The first ones were the series by Ian Watson, which predates the black library I think. Watson was an hired outside author, and I think influenced the lore of 40k in his own ways. I read a few books of the horus heresy, but stopped at one point, I think because the actual book wasn't that good and the grander story progressed slowly. But maybe I will continue some day.
I liked the two Inquisition Triologies by Dan Abnett (Eisenhorn and Ravenor).
But my reading list is long and most books on it are better than most black library books, but the world is interesting and they are quick reads, that serve well as something enjoyable between other books.

Finally wh40k gave a style of fantasy books its name,, which I quite like: GrimDark (I don't see this as any strong definitin, more as a label one gives to books).

Big fan of Dan Abnett's stuff: Ravenor, Eisenhorn, etc...

Oops... but of course that's Warhammer 40K. Different (maybe?) to what you were asking about.
