eBook, audiobook & dictionary in French
Hi, I'm re-learning French by listening to audiobooks.
In French conversation I have found that when I tell another participant that I don't understand a word, if they give me the English translation of that word, I become completely unable to continue to converse in French. So, I want a French-French dictionary, French ebook, and French audiobook. Should I have a completely separate ebook reader to achieve this? I'm doing this on my iPhone SE. In French I am using iTunes, iBooks (which reads the audiobook) In English I use Calibre, Calibre Companion, Marvin. There is a dictionary on there, but I'm not sure what it is. And Audible for audiobooks. I don't read many books on the iphone, so am not too familiar with the various software. On my Android, in English, I use Calibre, Calibre Companion, FBReader and FBReader's dictionary. Not listening to audiobooks there. |

You could do worse than a $50 Fire tablet for this. It has excellent TTS (in about 2 dozen languages), translation dictionaries for about ten languages, ad hoc translation (highlight a phrase or paragraph and it will do Bing translate). And Audible of course.
Kindles have a feature called 'Vocabulary Builder' which keeps track of dictionary lookups and lets you 'practice' recall. Of course no TTS or Audible. It includes more translation dictionaries as well (but not really an issue if you are only interested in French). Too bad has not added VB feature to their mobile apps to date. On iOS, you have Speak Screen feature which works with some reading apps (iBooks and Kindle at least), but TTS is not as usual (Bookari is only one I know of). Android has several reading apps with TTS. Kindle apps have Bing Translate (when online). |
