Daughters put a password on her Kindle4(NT)

my middle daughter has put a password on her Kindle4NT and she is positive it is a particular word. However, we've tried this world oodles of different was yet the Kindle is relenting.

I've checked Amazon and their advice wipes all of her books off.

She is rather heartbroke about all of this and I've told her alot will come back, however this isn't helping.

Does anyone know anyway of retrieving the password?

No, there is no way to retrieve the password. That would be completely insecure.

All her notes and last read positions should be synchronised with her Amazon account. Doing a full reset shouldn't lose any ebooks that have been bought through her Amazon account, and any other books should be re-downloadable from wherever she get them originally.

What, exactly, is she concerned that she might lose though a full reset?

Lord knows. I've told here the books will comeback and the only books on there are the ones she (we) have bought.

I thought as much for retrieving the password. However, I do think the solution is far worse.

Someone steals your Kindle
It's Passworded
They type a sentence and they have a fresh wiped Kindle.

Perhaps a networked Kindle Password that can only be reset online (in Wifi or 3G area) would be more sensible.

Off to reset her Kindle.

If all the books were from Amazon, getting them all back should be easy.

Books from outside Amazon shouldn't be a problem unless there's no copy on her computer and she forgot where she got them or they're no longer available.

Those are the breaks for pretty much any item that is lost or stolen.

Should the Kindle ever be lost/stolen, contact Amazon. They will blacklist the Kindle, and whoever finds it will not be able to register it to their account, so it would not be fully functional.

Before factory resetting, you should copy everything off the USB drive. You can read about what options are available to you in the Developers Corner. Things like diags mode, USB export, etc.

The password probably did NOT encrypt her books, but only locks access to her main menu. You can wipe the password and other configuration info without wiping the books by zeroing the persistent userstore partition (/dev/mmcblk0p3).

Check out the Select Boot thread in the Dev Corner forum, to see how to boot to diags. No jailbreak or other modifications needed. You can export the USB drive from there, or get root shell where you type linux commands, or whatever you want...

A passworded kindle presents very little challenge it you use the tools available in the Dev Corner...
