ePub fails to convert
I have an ePub file that won't convert - I can open it up and edit it in Calibre's editor, view it, no problem, but it won't convert to any format. I just get a Failed: Convert book 1 of 1 message.
Here's the conversion log; Spoiler:
Bearing in mind that I'm basically tech illiterate...help? Last edited by theducks; 07-03-2018 at 04:35 PM. Reason: WRAP IN SPOILER |

Did you VALIDATE while it was in the editor? (the ladybug icon)
(and correct RED flagged errors) |

For some reason I didn't get email alerts about the responses here, but I did end up trying the ladybug (for the first time) and following its instructions has done the trick, so thank you!

I did not understand the answer to your subscriber's problem which is also mine.

Basically, you open the epub in calibre's editor (right click on the book and then edit book) then click on the error check icon (a red ladybug with a stripe on it's back). If it shows any errors, correct those errors and try converting the book again. You can use the try to fix all fixable errors automatically option though my preference is manual correction. If you attempt to convert an ebook with errors, GIGO is the usual result.

In addition to running the error check ladybug and then having Calibre automatically fix the errors, running Beautify Files can also fix errors that will cause problems.

I hit the same problem but the ladybug (thanks for pointing me to this anyway) does not help.
There were 3 errors and I "corrected" them one at a time but still no luck. I believe the first error was because an HTML value was listed as #00007 (should be #000007 I assume). The other 2 errors did not make a lot of sense to me but they appeared to be correctable. I don't know how to copy the errors from the left side but individually on the right side they are: Spoiler:

Still can't convert
Unfortunately, that log I printed was from a Dialog with title "Conversion error"
At the top of the log it says: Failed: Convert book 1 of 1 (The Anatomy Lesson) Even when I look in that /tmp folder, I see .pickle and .log files, but no .mobi files. Finally when I click on the book itself back in the main window, it says: "Formats: EPUB", whereas other books in the past I successfully converted it will say "Formats: EPUB, MOBI". Any other ideas?? Thanks, Chris |

If you are on linux uninstall the distro supplied calibre package and install the official calibre binaries and you should be fine.

Solved!
Thanks kovidgoyal!
I must have missed an email notification of your reply but I just now found it and your suggestion worked perfectly, not even a single error reported! I'm curious what the issue was as I run Arch (ie. rolling distro) and "calibre --version" was already reporting 3.48 (current same as official binaries). I wonder if I should even mention this on the Arch AUR page. Definitely solved me and could save other people a lot of time. |
