3243010037 was the build the unit where my JB failed was running too...
Maybe. Or another market? What is strange is that both units I tried to downgrade had that same "8". One had no trouble (but had been OTA upgraded to an unknown firmware version before) and the other got stuck while other devices running the exact same firmware had no trouble. So the problem isn't caused by different hardware. But it's not caused by different software (in itself) neither as other people with the same software had no trouble. |

I can confirm that I downgraded:
PW3 g090 g105 XXXX XXXX 5.8.11 (3243010037) to 5.8.9.0.1 (3175970011) using update_pw3_factory_5.8.9.0.1.bin US device, purchased directly from amazon, without special offers - * skipped registration * after the update timer pinged off, the device spent ~15 minutes at the tree, then finally displayed the device options screen. I have not yet jailbroken it. Thank you to this thread, especially @knc1 @coplate @datanoise |

Now it is getting a bit clearer: As mentioned by knc1, newer fw versions contain a new flag "Disable Authentication on First Connect".
It looks like a pattern is showing up: All new devices right out of the box probably allow a (single?) downgrade to a factory build firmware, provided that they aren't registered yet, and/or haven't got an OTA update. First out-of-the-box fw with this behaviour could be 5.8.9.0.1. And it even might be true for the 5.9.* crap... |

Yes, the factory test builds aren't intented for normal use. And as for the differences between 5.8.9.0.1 and 5.8.11: The lattercontais new features, bugfixes and stability enhancements. "Theoretically" especially the factory fw 5.8.9.0.1 may be used productively though. A friend of mine is still running this version on his PW3, and all hacks work like a charm...

Hmm, tempted to get a used PW3 now that I've discovered ebay seller goodystore. At $120-140 plus tax for a Kindle w/o Special Offers, I wouldn't attempt it. At $40, seems worth a try. Last edited by ilovejedd; 03-03-2018 at 02:45 PM. |

A cheap used pw3 with an always-present serial port (knc1 style) would sure be a great tool for trying various things...
@Antinoos the first PW3 I downgraded had been registered and had been OTA upgraded... It worked flawlessly! |

... then this OTA version was below 5.8.8 - thus we're now talking about the Good Old Times[tm]... :-)
I've meant currently bought devices. Then the OTA fw is always >= 5.8.8, and therefore they're no longer jailbreakable... |

No it was bought less than a month ago. I did an OTA upgrade when it came, then tried to jailbreak it nonetheless: it worked.

I dunno about hundreds of copies being freely downloadable. I tried 20 links (English, Chinese, Russian, Japanese) and all of them just linked to the same Baidu url and required creation of a Baidu cloud account. The single adrive link I found already had the file removed.

Don't think either would've helped. Per Google Translate, Baidu says the file is too big (I think it was ~740MB?) so they require installation of their app to download. Alas, the app requires login.
Anyway, another forum member already helped me get a copy. |

Didn't have this problem, that's why I asked. Tried without the addons, still works for me without installing anything with both firefox & chrome. They probably have different policies depending on the country the request is coming from.

Any specific query term in a web search engine will vary in its results depending on who does it.
They all attempt to "improve your search experience by providing the most relevant results". Which is the Politically Correct spin on: "We maintain complete data mined records of your on-line activity to limit the workload on our search servers to provide you with only what we think you might be interested in." That is, try it yourself - Pick a search engine, pick search terms, execute on your usual computer from your usual location. Print the screen of responses. Go to a friends house, taking only the search terms, use the same search engine, nothing else of yours. Print the screen of responses. Compare. |
