Dragons? Yea or Nay?

Writers are always warning each other to stay away from cliche elements like elves and dragons. But the truth is, I LOVE dragons. Almost any dragon, in any form, as long as it's neither imbecilic nor smart-mouthed. All other things being equal, I'm more likely to buy a book with dragons in it than one without.

What about you guys?

My husband even has a dragon tattoo.

As much as I would like to say I don't care, I tend to stay away from books with dragons in it. My husband on the other hand will go out of his way to find books with dragons in it (only if they're shown as good though, none of the dragon slaying thing)

I'm OK with the threat of dragons, but I don't actually want to "see" them or have them be characters (or god forbid have them talk) in the books I read.

There is no refreshing, new twist that an author can come up with for dragons... it's been done.

I have a terrible case of elfinorcaphobia, as well.

IMO, if handled with care like Martin is doing with A Song of Ice and Fire, absolutely, LOVE dragons.

Maybe some kind of sci-fi dragon treatment?

Then again, I am a huge Godzilla fan, so...

Also, maybe for stuff like this question, a poll option on the thread would be good? Would save you a bit of effort in tallying the responses.

Another vote for Dragon neutral. I have enjoyed most of Naomi Novik's series so far, but other than The Hobbit and Smaug - they are the only dragon-centric books I've read.

I've just started reading A Song of Ice and Fire and although dragons have been mentioned, they haven't made an appearance yet.

Make them heartless baddies, not friendly sissies. They shouldn't even dignify to talk to ridiculous human beings, except to trick them into their jaws.
