Will Amazon make phones at some point?

Android and Apples dominate the market of phones. Is the Kindle Fire the first step towards Amazon's entry into the phone business?

It would be the opposite path to Apple, who started with iPhone and continued with iPad...

Ciao!

It doesn't make any sense for Amazon to create a phone. They don't manufacture stuff, anyway - they farm it out to subcontractors.

Their content (whereby they make money) is more for use on a tablet or Kindle, rather than a phone. Plenty of manufacturers make phones already that can use the Kindle app, etc. How would an Amazon-branded phone help them?

I could see it happening, but I don't think it actually would. Their whole deal is content, not hardware. Apple is a combination of both. Google is...Google.

I agree with you. It does not make sense from a industry point of view. But you never know. And the same thing is true for a tablet (I'm no expert, but I think there is a Kindle app for the iPad), but the Kindle Fire is out :-)

I wouldn't be surprised. Maybe an e-ink phone?

No, because it wouldn't be competitive and would be the same as any other Android based phone. When you have 4 million people who just bought their new iPhone 4S, why would you even want to make the gamble?

I think it is possible, especially if they could partner with a telco to provide 'discount' calling/data plans, or more consumer-friendly terms for their phones. There are many people (myself included) who would get a smartphone if the plans were more flexible and fair.

I would point out that Amazon is in the wireless business (in the US), but right now I assume they derive income solely from sales commissions. Why are they doing this, if not to test the waters?

I'd think we would know better than to start a sentence with that by now.

My guess is: possibly. A couple years out.

Interesting question. What would be wrong with an e-Ink phone? There was one started that had a rollup screen but it never seemed to make it to market. Take a look at Readius in our wiki.

E-Ink on a phone would not be a breakthrough, I think:
1) Phone screens are usually massively bright TFTs, which are easy to read even on a sunny beach
2) Imagine browsing through your contacts and the screen takes ages to refresh
3) Advantages in battery life would not be huge, as the display gets automatically switched off when the phone is not being used.

However, Amazon could still make a Fire-like phone. It would be hard to compete against Android and Apple... But maybe in a year or so the Amazon brand will be stronger thanks to the Fire tablet. You never know :-)

Ciao!

The mad race right now is not to sell content, but to profit from understanding customer behavior and interests. Hence Google phones, Amazon tablets, etc.

So either they'll try to make the Silk browser popular on other platforms, or, if that fails, enter the handset game.

I simply cannot see amazon making a phone for any reason. Always possible I could be wrong of course, but it doesn't make any sense to me.

I believe this is the killer idea. Thanks for sharing, I find this comment extremely smart.
We might see a Silk for iPhone or a Silk for Android pretty soon.
On top of that, a phone with a Silk Browser is itself a good enough reason for Amazon to make a phone :-), just because of what you also said:
