WOW .. $35 dollar "laptop" from India
Intersting read here ( small news blub ),
Seems its a $35 dollar Laptop system, touch screen runing Linux. Im guessing from description that the programs etc are embedded in the firm ware vs having a hard drive some sort. $35 dollar "Laptop" to be released in 2011 |

Yahoo News has a little more detail here.
It looks like it uses a SSD, which means that Linux apps like FBReader should work. The question is, for $35 including dislay and touch screen overlay, how much can you afford for CPU/memory/storage/battery etc. Now if it has an SD card slot ... well ... Anyway, it should make dedicated reader manufacturers sit up and look, after all it has to be more capable than say, a JetBook. |

After India's other foray's into cheap electronics [failed cheap laptop is what I'm thinking of], I'll believe it when it happens, not before...

It has 2GB of flash, so not exactly an SSD, but still very usable as a reader.
Unfortunately, the devil is in the rather large detail of actually making it: "This is just a prototype," education expert Zubin Malhotra told Newsxlive. "We need to find people who will be able to manufacture these devices at these price points and continue to develop them going forward." Um, right... That $35 price-point will probably go the way of the $100 OLPC once the realities of manufacturing take hold. Still, even at twice the price it's fairly attractive. |

I could see $100 getting you a reasonable, if not state of the art, tablet. We aren't too far from that already.
