@JSWolf - trying Compatibility mode and Run as administrator can each be done in a couple of minutes with a couple of clicks, without doing a restart - if either works then that might give a clue as where the problem lies.

Disabling everything that can be disabled is a much bigger task and it will require restarts. In the case of disabling services it's potentially dangerous, the system might not restart. Before doing anything along these lines you'd want to make sure a) you had a current bootable backup on a thumb drive or DVD, and b) you've tested it. In short it could be hours of 'work'.

A better approach in this instance might be to create VM and install calibre in it, rather than crippling a working system. Assuming calibre works in the VM, one would then progressively add one's 3rd party software to it. Eventually, hopefully, calibre won't start, one would then go into the real machine and exorcise that item and verify calibre will now start - hopefully.

True. It won't take long to try these things out.

The only things to disable would be third party services and you'd also have to disable all third party programs from running. I'm not suggesting to disable OS services because that won't help as they aren't the issue.

There's one other thing that can be tried. Uninstall all the third party software you can instead of disabling the services/programs from running. They can be re-installed later.

Where would one get Windows 10 Creator Update to install in a VM without paying for it?

@Blossom - IMO you probably need to reinstall Windows, the following will do it in a manner that won't require reinstalling all your 3rd party software ==>> Repair Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade.

There's a similar tutorial from same source at the Windows 7 forums.

The media creator tool can be used to download the ISO. then you need a license... I happen to have a spare

But see You Don’t Need a Product Key to Install and Use Windows 10 which should be fine for the purposes of creating a 'temporary' VM.

Not possible for me to do. You need a disc drive or thumb drive. I don't think it's Windows. Everything is working fine. It's just Calibre being cranky after the creater update. It works just takes awhile or couple tries to get it to launch then it works fine.

This weekend I'll do some troubleshooting see if I can figure out the problem. I'll report back if I find anything.

I somehow got the impression, from a post elsewhere I think, that your slow starts were wider spread

FWIW - I think you can do the inline repair off an ISO saved to a regular hard drive - or at least you could with Win 7, I've never needed to do it with Win 10.

But that's by-and-bye, I'll PM you with a couple of ideas.

I appreciate all of your advice. The only thing I haven't done is reset my pc. I'm going to follow the FAQ recommendations and we'll see what happens.

Yes, that should do for the purpose of creating a VM to install a fresh Windows 10. I do think a fresh Windows 10 should work with Calibre.

A fresh Windows 10 in a VM and Calibre 64-bit doesn't work?

Where did the MSI come from? Or was it cleansed by a rogue A/V?
