@JSWolf - trying Compatibility mode and Run as administrator can each be done in a couple of minutes with a couple of clicks, without doing a restart - if either works then that might give a clue as where the problem lies.
Disabling everything that can be disabled is a much bigger task and it will require restarts. In the case of disabling services it's potentially dangerous, the system might not restart. Before doing anything along these lines you'd want to make sure a) you had a current bootable backup on a thumb drive or DVD, and b) you've tested it. In short it could be hours of 'work'. A better approach in this instance might be to create VM and install calibre in it, rather than crippling a working system. Assuming calibre works in the VM, one would then progressively add one's 3rd party software to it. Eventually, hopefully, calibre won't start, one would then go into the real machine and exorcise that item and verify calibre will now start - hopefully. BR |

There's one other thing that can be tried. Uninstall all the third party software you can instead of disabling the services/programs from running. They can be re-installed later. Quote:

But see You Don’t Need a Product Key to Install and Use Windows 10 which should be fine for the purposes of creating a 'temporary' VM. BR Last edited by BetterRed; 09-21-2017 at 08:30 PM. |

FWIW - I think you can do the inline repair off an ISO saved to a regular hard drive - or at least you could with Win 7, I've never needed to do it with Win 10. But that's by-and-bye, I'll PM you with a couple of ideas. BR |

I appreciate all of your advice. The only thing I haven't done is reset my pc. I'm going to follow the FAQ recommendations and we'll see what happens.

rckmnr, did you or did you not try a Windows 10 in a VM with Calibre 64-bit?
If you did, did Calibre work? |
