Discrepancy in >Differences between books<
b2 --with-regex It is known: pictures say everything. Even so, my comment: (Smarten Punctuation) That’s totally over the top! "With all Good Wishes for Christmas and the New Year" We still need you, as you know ... your chaot

Could you tell us what you actually did? Sure, there is a difference shown. But, you don't say how the difference window was opened. For all I know you are you comparing two versions of the book and one has two hypens, and the the other either an emdash or endash. That sounds reasonable as they are different.
I can take a guess that this is after doing a smarten punctuation in the editor. The other changes seem to agree with this and you vaguely mention it. If so, I don't understand the problem. Two hyphens/dashes together like that should get converted to an emdash. At least, that is what has been done in every punctuation smartener that I have used. Have I missed the point? If so, please explain in detail what the problem is. And include all the steps needed to reproduce the problem. If you think, "Should I include that detail?", the answer is "yes". And a sample file is always helpful. Maybe a before and after file? |

OK, context: I am writing a book! Both, the subject of the book (regular expressions) and the manual process to produce an EPUB is still largely unknown. Nevertheless, the progress I find remarkable - with confidence, I gladly announce the presentation for Christmas 2017.
These regular expressions are very useful for text editing, HTML & CSS are mandatory anyway. Well, a secondary aspect is that the brain cells get trained. Quote:

I have discovered the matter only by chance, the book got over 300 pages. God knows what else has been 'smartened'? Does there exist a list what kind of 'things' get smartened and how - before/after status!? Last edited by chaot; 12-30-2016 at 05:51 AM. Reason: add: gladly |

Or do you think that "regular expressions" are little known? If so, really? Quote:

@chaot - IIRC calibre made use of daring fireballs smarty pants regex routines - but I have a feeling it was replaced by something 'smarter'. Or maybe I'm thinking of Diap Dealers PunctuationSmarten plugin for Sigil.
Anyway there's lots of stuff on the 'net about punctuation smartening - someone's probably written a PhD dissertation on it - in double time four part harmony I shouldn't wonder. Conversion Look & Feel has options to Smarten AND UNsmarten populations punctuation. BR Last edited by BetterRed; 12-30-2016 at 07:00 AM. |

EDIT The following only takes # 4
Responsible for the content are experts. @chaot compiles and edits the whole bunch to an EPUB - available free of charge to everybody. I will not even ask for donations! By the way that work will make me also to a (little) expert, for editing EPUBs and Regexes. Quote:
You will think these passers-by are not interested anyway: Yes, the most not. The rest, however, the information acquisition on the Internet will be too inconvenient, to buy a corresponding book too expensive. So much interest does not exist. But the free EPUB for the socalled john (english loo), that's exactly what they need, I guess. Quote:
That's not the point. Unfortunately, MobileRead suppresses quotes in the repeating citation. Quote:
Diap's Editing Toolbag: I will try and report. But not today! And then a new question arises. Punctuation rules are probably different depending on the language. This should be considered, possibly pointed out. Last edited by chaot; 12-30-2016 at 07:45 AM. Reason: add: EDIT and ;) |

My point was that your original post was unclear and I had to take a guess as to what the problem was. Quote:

Just my two cents. Regex are so unknown to the non-computer interested (we're not talking about professional here) as the kind of optical glasses or window glasses (a lot, as I've listened to some experts) are. If somebody who is going to work with regex isn't able to find information in internet, giving the nature of the matter, he's going to have a bigger problem in his hands. *going down of the soap box*

chaot, the yellow text in your signature is both unreadable and annoying. Would you mind changing the color? Thanks.

@BetterRed #5 & #6
Heavy stuff! You should understand: Writing a book you got no time for something like that. Anyway, thanks for your effort. |

Actually I find neither colour easy to read. Why not just use black on white...

I agree that neither color is easy to read. Also, both colors are unpleasant to look at on a white background. Best solution is to stop the colors. You won't get much help if we cannot easily read what you write.
