I was actually taking about "computer system" in general, to be honest. Not specifically about Kindles.
In the case of Kindles, however, I think they still hold, but again: as a general rule, and as a general good security habits. Of course in the particular case where you never ever connect to the internet even the smallest need goes away.

However it was not about being obliged. No one is; it was just about rushing to apply the latest patches or not, and we explained why we don't rush.

So, this wasn't in the release notes, but the browser on Kindle scribe is MUCH improved.

It renders things correctly now across the board, has a different set of fonts, zooms and scrolls much more smoothly, and just runs faster all over.

There's a very sound reason not to, while the urgency to fix security issues is so low to be practically non-existent (and in case of Kindles, it is factually non-existent as the security fix Lab126 talks about are usually just made up, and more, you can just keep wifi off for a few days).

On my Scribe, html5test.com gives it a score of 467/555. It says 'You are using Silk 80.4 on an Amazon Kindle Fire'.

My Fire HD 10 Plus scores 474/555. 'Silk 118.1 on a KFTRPWI running Android 9'.

I would be curious what Kindles which have not been updated show, as well as results from other sites that test browser capabilities.

Wonder if one can login to Libby, cloud services etc. now too, and what kind of content can be downloaded if any (.mobi? .pdf? .azw3? .kfx?).

Answer: '.AZW, .PRC, .MOBI, or .TXT'. MOBI needs to be 'both' I think (at least 'new'/KF8 only does not work, 'old' probably will).

Some like to have bleeding edge. Others are afraid of it.

I know one software company that was always late to update their app every time macOS had an update. Even if Mac had betas available. They finally change their way of doing and now customers don’t have to wait weeks before updating.

Perhaps that many of us live in countries where Webster's bastardization of the English language is not acceptable usage? After all, it was called An American Dictionary of the English Language and not An Universal Dictionary of the English Language.

Then there was the Space Shuttle Endeavour where the u appears in the name.

BTW, An American Dictionary of the English Language was released in 1828 so not quite "over 200 years" unless you are writing from 2029.

Perhaps you have noticed that I'm Canadian? In these parts, we tend to be very accepting of the various oddities in English orthography. Heck, we are even accepting of New Zealand's continued use of fiord instead of fjord.

And yes, we do use both ise and ize. Looking in most Canadian dictionaries, you will often see multiple spellings with the first listed being the preferred. Oddly, if you look at British spelling, you will also find ise/ize being used.

Of course, since the northernmost settlement in Canada is Grise Fiord aka Aujuittuq (Inuktitut ᐊᐅᔪᐃᑦᑐᖅ, 'Place that never thaws'), we may be biased towards fiord.
