ePub Date of publication -> calibre Published?

I've added some ePubs that have the Date of publication in their metadata, but calibre seems to ignore this field.

Where does it get the Published column from?

What does it do if there is more than one
tag? e.g.

Code:

Ah, OK it's using the last one listed.

Feedbooks use this for historical novels, etc. and they (logically?) put the original publication date first, so that gets ignored by calibre.

Personally, I'm almost never interested in the date of the electronic edition, but I am interested when the work first appeared.

Is there any chance of an option to get calibre to use the earliest date (chronologically)?

Sigh, whose bright idea was using multiple
tags? Given that the epub spec has no clear specification on how multiple date tags or the event attribute are to be interpreted, this is a recipe for chaos.

Next release of calibre will use the earliest date as pubdate.

If it's not specifically outlawed I suppose people are just going to do it.

It would be nice if this was clearer, but a standard with murky areas is better than no standard at all. Hopefully it will improve.
