badbob001,
The font differences may be down to the books and the fact the 1000 uses mobi and the 800 is epub.

Right, but is that a factor in the perception of sharpness? I guess we'll find out when the DR1000 is upgraded to the same level of firmware... or perhaps a comparison of two pdfs with the same embedded font.

Same PDF on iRex 1000S and 800S.
Pic1: iRex 1000S.
Pic2: iRex 800S, original layout.
Pic3: iRex 800S, increasing font size to have about same measurements as on iRex 1000S.

Text appears a bit darker on iRex 1000S, contrast a bit higher.

Adobe's default font for mobile ADE is not the crispest and is always serif (their sans-serif is better, perhaps because Sans Serif is harder to screw up). You can use your own fonts on the DR800SG in ePubs, but you have to edit each ePub's CSS, see (off topic) FBReader Release for the DR1000S.

I don't know why most vendors stick with Adobe's fonts - they are totally free to switch to better default fonts. Bookeen and B&N have user selectable default fonts for ePubs, which is the best approach of all.
