Possibly Posterior Vitreous Detachment (PVD)? Unfortunately, I've been through that for both eyes, 12 months apart. The first time was quite frightening, I was a bit more relaxed about the second time. Luckily (??? ) the 'huge floater' became lots of little floaters within a day.

Or it could be a sign of problems due to diabetes as well. I had a bit of smouldering (slight leakage in the left eye) from weak blood vessels in the eye as a result of my diabetes. The eye Dr. had me get laser treatment to stop it from getting worse.
