Calibre Not Seeing Kobo Aura H20 Edition 2 Contents

A friend has a Kobo Aura H2O Edition 2. He cannot get Calibre to detect its contents. So, we connected it to my laptop. Same thing. The device is seen as a removable device under Windows 10 and Calibre sees it as being connected. But when we go to "Device" nothing is displayed.

Then we got an error. Below is the data that was copied to the Clipboard.

calibre, version 3.14.0
ERROR: Error: Error communicating with device

CantOpenError: unable to open database file

Traceback (most recent call last):

CantOpenError: CantOpenError: unable to open database file

I checked all of the Kobo plugins. All are installed and are up-to-date. Even searched for new ones that may be specific to this model Kobo.

Is there anything else that we can do to get Kobo to talk to Calibre?

Thanks
Martin

That error means the database on the device is corrupted. It means that the driver cannot open the database properly to read it. Until this is fixed, calibre will not be able to do anything with the device. And, it will also mean problems when using the device. These problems will usually be losing the reading status of books, or books disappearing and being reimported each time the device is disconnected from the PC as it cannot update the database. These problems are most noticeable after restarting the device as it as any information it can read from the database will be from before when the corruption happened.

The solution is to sign out of the Kobo account on the device. This will rebuild the database from scratch and reimport the books from the device. Unfortunately, you will lose the reading status of any sideloaded books.

Thanks David. I'll pass this onto my friend for him to try.

As far as books go on the device, he has purchased one book, no "side loaded" books. It's a new device. Just wondering, if it's new how can it become corrupted like this?

The database corruption can be caused by a few things. One is not ejecting it from the PC properly. Others are a crash on the device or something that prevented the database from being written properly. It could be a faulty device, and if it keeps happening without any other obvious cause, then that's what I'd be looking at. But, it isn't my first thought.
