Strange behaviour

I noticed that Calibre "forgets" a descriptive line from the header when splitting an HTML file into two.

Code:
 <meta content="application/xhtml+xml; charset=utf-8" http-equiv="Content-Type"/>
Is this related to the fact that the file itself is an HTML and not an XHTML one? That line comes from a commercial book BTW.

Thanks for clarifying.

The same thing also happens with xhtml files.

Which brings me to the conclusion that calibre thinks this line is superfluous.

It is superfluous since the default encoding for HTML in epub/azw3 files is defined as utf-8 --which means that when charset is not declared, it *must* be assumed to be utf-8.

And the calibre editor guarantees that edited HTML files are always saved as UTF-8, regardless of the encoding of file originally.
