Tarkington, Booth: The Flirt (illustrated). v1, 09 February 2012

The Flirt, first published 1913.
Booth Tarkington (winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1919 for The Magnificent Ambersons, and again in 1922 for Alice Adams) wrote with humor and understanding of American middle-class life.
The Flirt looks at the lives of the Madison family in a quiet middle-America city in the early 1900's. Two beautiful sisters (Cora, the flirtateous, self-centered belle; and the lovely talented Laura, living in her younger sister's shadow). A bratty young teenage brother (harbinger of Penrod?). Wryly satiric humor. Pathos. Bathos. Soap-opera melodrama. An oil-swindle scam. Murder. Love, unrequited and requited. These elements are woven in a tapestry of wonderfully descriptive words.

Hope you enjoy it!
