Some cheap chinese replacement batteries for various devices contain a cloned chip copied from an authentic authorized battery, allowing them to work. Unless authorized by amazon, they would be counterfeit batteries in that case, but may work fine anyway, and may or may not eventually burn down your house while being charged.

I know that this is done with replacement toner when the laser printers manufacturer puts a chip in the toner cartridge.

Except in the case of toner, it is pure greed (IMHO), but in the case of a lithium battery, it can be rationalized as a safety issue (fire hazard).

The fire hazard from lithium batteries is very real. That's why (a piece of useless trivia ) the poor astronauts in the International Space Station can't have Kindles. Devices with lithium batteries aren't "space certified". Only things with old-fashioned AA batteries are allowed.
