Grimm, Brothers: Grimms’ Fairy Tales (English trans, illus). v1. 22 Feb 2017

Grimms’ Fairy Tales:
Collected and edited by Jacob Grimm (1785–1863) and Wilhelm Grimm (1786–1869)

Presenting all 211 tales of the Grimms’ collection, translated from the German by Margaret Raine Hunt (1831–1912)
With 440 illustrations by Otto Ubbelohde (1867–1922)
Plus many alternate and additional tales
And an essay by Andrew Lang (1844–1912)

-----------------
Original text first published 1812 ~ 1857; this translation first published 1884. Illustrations first published 1906 ~ 1908.

The original German text, this translation, and the essay by Andrew Lang are in the public domain worldwide because the creators died more than 100 years ago, and they were published prior to 1923. The illustrations are in the public domain in countries where copyright is “Life+90” or less, and in the USA.

The name “Grimm” has become synonymous with fairy-tales. Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, university-trained philologists, also published scholarly works about mythology, linguistics, and medieval studies; but it is for their collection of folk- and fairy-tales that they are remembered.

As noted in Margaret Hunt’s Preface, the Grimms, in creating this extensive collection, “were not providing amusement for children, but storing up material for students of folklore.” They were not, of course, the authors of these stories, but rather collectors and editors of folk-tales, primarily from oral tradition, many passed down for generations, some possibly originating in antiquity.

The tales “have a core that is capable of appealing, across historical periods and national affiliations, to the deepest reaches of human experience” [David Blamires, Telling Tales]. Some of the stories are sweet morality tales, and many are comic in tone, but brutality, horror, and cruel death exist here in full measure. Unlike most English translations, which were often groomed for children, Hunt’s (still considered by many to be one of the most faithful translations) retains much of the grittiness of the original tales.

So here you are: the quintessential fairy tale collection, with dozens of stories crying out “Remember me?” “Read ME!” “Betcha never heard of ME before!”

Enjoy!
