error from Sigil when loading particular epub file
Hello. I've been working on a particular epub file in Sigil with no problems until this morning. Now, when I try to open using Sigil, nothing happens. Or, when I go into Sigil and try opening it from there, I get a "Sigil has stopped working" message.
However, my other epub files open just fine. And the file will open in Calibre. Any thoughts on how I might get Sigil to open this? Thanks very much. |

Hmm ... that has never happened to me. In Sigil Preferences try enabling Mend on Open just in case there is an issue with not well-formed xhtml or errors in the opf. If that doesn't help, then I would guess the issue is something in that particular epub confuses Sigil for some reason.
If so, I would appreciate you posting the problem epub privately someplace and PM ing KevinH (me) or DiapDealer (the developers/maintainers of Sigil) on this MR site with the url of the epub you posted. We will be able to debug what is causing the problems for Sigil and let you know how to workaround it until we get that bug fixed. Once we have the problem diagnosed and fixed we will delete your problem epub from our machines. Please do NOT post it publicly unless you are the author/copyright owner. Thanks for your bug report. |

Another approach would be to use the equivalent of a borkify plugin (if one exists for Calibre) that will replace just the actual text with gibberish leaving the tag structure untouched and then uploading that borked epub here as an attachment. With that we should be able to figure out what is going on.

Depending how that utility or plug-in works, it might alter the structure of the ePub and thus no longer be a good representation.

But that won't fix the bug in Sigil. So if there is any way we could get a copy of the problem epub in some safe form (ie. scrambled), that would definitely help get the bug fixed.

Yes. I would prefer to have a chance to find out why Sigil can't open it. Automatically fixing it with calibre could eliminate that chance. At the very least, keep a copy of the original problematic version, please.

Calibre's Check book produces a list of errors before it offers the choice to automatically fix all errors

I've had this same problem once or twice. The solution I found was to open it with calibre editor, fix the errors and save. The resulting file worked fine with Sigil.

Noting what errors were fixed (or saving the original problematic epub) would go a long way toward helping us to improve Sigil. We can't fix it if we can't reproduce it.

As DiapDealer said ... we need copies of broken ones that will not load in Sigil. Do you have any?
