EARTHCORE by Scott Sigler is 99 cents at Amazon until Oct 15th. This one may have been self-published in 2001 but he has now been picked up by a trad pub. GR 4.16 I've read his Infected series and enjoyed those although they were a much later work. Also available on Hoopla.

https://www.amazon.com/EARTHCORE-Sco...ords=earthcore

Quote:
Deep below a desolate Utah mountain lies the largest platinum deposit ever discovered. EarthCore is the company with the technology, the resources, and the guts to go after the mother lode. Young executive Connell Kirkland is the company’s driving force, pushing himself and those around him to uncover the massive treasure. But at three miles below the surface, something has been waiting for centuries. Waiting…and guarding.

Kim Stanley Robinson's The Martians is currently just 99p at Amazon UK and Kobo.

Quote:
A glorious companion volume to Robinson’s world-wide bestselling trilogy.

All Colours Mars

Red Mars. Green Mars. Blue Mars.

The Mars trilogy has rapidly assumed the status of modern science fiction classic, capturing the imagination of hundreds of thousands of readers around the world. Now, with The Martians, comes Kim Stanley Robinson’s essential companion to the Mars series. New novellas and short stories head the collection, along with texts on the Martian constitution, maps and Martian inspired poetry.

In short, The Martians is a unique collection of previously unpublished fiction, a fascinating addition to Robinson’s oeuvre, and a must for all lovers of the red planet.

Andy Weir's The Martian is just £0.99 at Amazon UK today as one of the Kindle Daily Deals.

So long as you found the opening sequence of Four Weddings and a Funeral funny rather than shocking, you'll probably enjoy this book. i.e. it includes a fair amount of swearing.

Brandon Sanderson's The Way of Kings is just £1.99 at Amazon UK today.

This might be because book 3 of the series has just come out.

Tor is giving away Ruthanna Emrys' Winter Tide free with newsletter signup for 72 hours. You have to do a new signup, apparently. The signup page says this one is available worldwide, and it's in ePub or Mobi formats.

Quote:
After attacking Devil’s Reef in 1928, the U.S. government rounded up the people of Innsmouth and took them to the desert, far from their ocean, their Deep One ancestors, and their sleeping god Cthulhu. Only Aphra and Caleb Marsh survived the camps, and they emerged without a past or a future.

The government that stole Aphra’s life now needs her help. FBI agent Ron Spector believes that Communist spies have stolen dangerous magical secrets from Miskatonic University, secrets that could turn the Cold War hot in an instant, and hasten the end of the human race.

Aphra must return to the ruins of her home, gather scraps of her stolen history, and assemble a new family to face the darkness of human nature.

You don’t have to use a different email if you already get the Tor newsletter. Just enter the email you already use to “verify” it.

Bargain (and DRM-free) @ $0.99 for today only (October 19th) from Subterranean Press as part of the Kindle Daily Deals in Canada & the US:

The Dispatcher by Hugo Award-winning author John Scalzi (ISFDB, Wikipedia), a standalone science fiction novella with mystery/thriller elements set in a future where murder has become almost impossible because almost everyone intentionally killed automatically revives for unknown reasons, thereby changing the world.

This originally appeared as an audiobook-exclusive version performed by Star Trek actor Zachary Quinto, which we received in 2016 as a freebie, and is now available in prose print form for your readalong pleasure. It seems to be another Amazon-exclusive discount, but if you like, you can ask for a price-match @ Kobo, where you keep the full Super Points on a purchase even after they refund you the difference.

One day, not long from now, it becomes almost impossible to murder anyone—999 times out of a thousand, anyone who is intentionally killed comes back. How? We don’t know. But it changes everything: war, crime, daily life.

Tony Valdez is a Dispatcher—a licensed, bonded professional whose job is to humanely dispatch those whose circumstances put them in death’s crosshairs, so they can have a second chance to avoid the reaper. But when a fellow Dispatcher and former friend is apparently kidnapped, Tony learns that there are some things that are worse than death, and that some people are ready to do almost anything to avenge what they see as a wrong.

It’s a race against time for Valdez to find his friend before it’s too late…before not even a Dispatcher can save him.

Anybody read Mark Lawrence? I see his name/books in a lot of epic fantasy lists. Was thinking of giving him at try. Amazon US has the first book in his Broken Empire trilogy and the first book in his Red Queen trilogy for $2.99 each.

R. Martin, Anne McCaffrey, Elizabeth Moon, Garth Nix, and many others.

I read the first book in the Red Queen Series and liked it. I would give it 4 stars. I have not read the others, although I intend to.

I'm planning to give him a try at some point, but holding out for more of a price drop on a first book. All the holiday sales are coming up!
