Amazon $1.99 Weekend Deal - Flowers for Algernon

And the winner is.... Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes. Price dropped from $7.99 to $1.99 until Sunday. This will probably get a price match everywhere else tomorrow, so you can check your favourite storefront for it. In case you grew up on Mars and have never heard of this:
Quote:
Daniel Keyes wrote little SF but is highly regarded for one classic, Flowers for Algernon. As a 1959 novella it won a Hugo Award; the 1966 novel-length expansion won a Nebula. The Oscar-winning movie adaptation Charly (1968) also spawned a 1980 Broadway musical.

Following his doctor's instructions, engaging simpleton Charlie Gordon tells his own story in semi-literate "progris riports." He dimly wants to better himself, but with an IQ of 68 can't even beat the laboratory mouse Algernon at maze-solving:

I dint feel bad because I watched Algernon and I lernd how to finish the amaze even if it takes me along time.

I dint know mice were so smart.

Algernon is extra-clever thanks to an experimental brain operation so far tried only on animals. Charlie eagerly volunteers as the first human subject.

Vote for next weekend's $1.99 deal here. The Nomination looks good, but you could vote for one of the others if you insist.

Sounds like a good deal. I can remember reading the story in high school. I can't recall if I read the short story or novel length version when in school but I do remember it. Cliff Robertson played the main character in the movie version.

Thank you, Synamon! I'm on a binge of reading/rereading the past Hugo awarded books, so this deal comes at the perfect time.

It is touching and poignant, but a very good read.

The short story is, IMHO, much more powerful than the later novelization.

This is not an Agency 6 ebook, so it's not likely to be price-matched. B&N has it at an outrageous $9.99, a dollar more than the mass market paperback they sell. Kobo is $8.55, so if you're looking for a cheap epub, you're not likely to find one.

Amazon UK don't have it as an ebook at all.

Not too awful, if you can pair it with one of the 35%-45% off coupons.

A truly heartbreaking book. I think it's a great book, but one I find difficult to read.

I read it many years ago, but I'm fairly certain I read the older novella version rather than the full-length novel offered by Amazon, as I read it as part of an anthology. It was definitely an excellent story, truly heartbreaking as described above. I've now purchased the full-length novel from Amazon, and it's now on my Kindle for future reading.

Thanks for the information!

BBC's A Good Read discussed it recently. One of the greatest SF stories of all time.
