Bargain @ $1.99 in the US only from Harcourt's Mariner Books imprint (should be the same price at all the usual retailers):

How to Travel with a Salmon & Other Essays by the late novelist and semiotician Umberto Eco (Wikipedia).

“Impishly witty and ingeniously irreverent” essays on topics from cell phones to librarians, by the author of The Name of the Rose and Foucault’s Pendulum (The Atlantic Monthly).

A cosmopolitan curmudgeon the Los Angeles Times called “the Andy Rooney of academia”—known for both nonfiction and novels that have become blockbuster New York Times bestsellers—Umberto Eco takes readers on “a delightful romp through the absurdities of modern life” (Publishers Weekly) as he journeys around the world and into his own wildly adventurous mind.

From the mundane details of getting around on Amtrak or in the back of a cab, to reflections on computer jargon and soccer fans, to more important issues like the effects of mass media and consumer civilization—not to mention the challenges of trying to refrigerate an expensive piece of fish at an English hotel—this renowned writer, semiotician, and philosopher provides “an uncanny combination of the profound and the profane” (San Francisco Chronicle).

“Eco entertains with his clever reflections and with his unique persona.” —Kirkus Reviews

Translated from the Italian by William Weaver

Lost Among the Birds: Accidentally Finding Myself in One Very Big Year by Neil Hayward for $CDN 1.99
https://www.amazon.ca/Lost-Among-Bir.../dp/B01ET4U6VU

The Amazon blurb:
"Early in 2013 Neil Hayward was at a crossroads. He didn't want to open a bakery or whatever else executives do when they quit a lucrative but unfulfilling job. He didn't want to think about his failed relationship with "the one” or his potential for ruining a new relationship with "the next one.” And he almost certainly didn't want to think about turning forty. And so instead he went birding.

Birding was a lifelong passion. It was only among the birds that Neil found a calm that had eluded him in the confusing world of humans. But this time he also found competition. His growing list of species reluctantly catapulted him into a Big Year--a race to find the most birds in one year. His peregrinations across twenty-eight states and six provinces in search of exotic species took him to a hoarfrost-covered forest in Massachusetts to find a Fieldfare; to Lake Havasu, Arizona, to see a rare Nutting's Flycatcher; and to Vancouver for the Red-flanked Bluetail. Neil's Big Year was as unplanned as it was accidental: It was the perfect distraction to life.

Neil shocked the birding world by finding 749 species of bird and breaking the long-standing Big Year record. He also surprised himself: During his time among the hummingbirds, tanagers, and boobies, he found a renewed sense of confidence and hope about the world and his place in it."

Desperate Journey by Francis Clifford

On 20th April 1942, Captain Thompson received word that the defensive line held by their Chinese allies had broken; orders or no orders, he knew they had to move.

Separated from the rest of the Burma Army and weary from months of continuous fighting retreats, the survivors of his Karen Company began their long walk northwards.

When Fort Hertz finally came into view in August, the journey of nine hundred miles and untold maladies had left many of them little more than walking skeletons.

Written in 1944, first published in 1979 by Hodder and Stoughton

Francis Clifford was the pen-name of Arthur Leonard Bell Thompson D.S.O. (1917-1975) who, as an officer of the Burma Rifles, served with distinction during World War II. Going on to write critically acclaimed thrillers, he was referred to as the “thinking man’s Ian Fleming” by the Daily Telegraph and was awarded both the Crime Writers’ Association’s Silver Dagger and the Mystery Writers of America’s Edgar Allen Poe Award twice in his literary career.

In days of yore there was no store like Amazon.com. There was no Jeff Bezos to slay the evil TradPub dragons. But there were other heroes.

The King of Burger. The Duke of Earl. The Purple Prince. But these must wait another day.

Today we have Thomas Asbridge to tell us the story of The Greatest Knight: The Remarkable Life of William Marshal, the Power Behind Five English Thrones for the pittance of $1.99.

Checklist of the Lepidoptera of British Columbia, Canada: Entomological Society of British Columbia Occasional Paper No. 3 (506 pp) by Gregory R. Pohl and Robert A. Cannings

Moths and butterflies (Lepidoptera) are one of the most diverse and economically important groups of insects, with approximately 157,000 species worldwide. This book establishes a definitive list of the {2832} species that occur in BC, and clarifies erroneous records in past works. It provides a knowledge baseline that will be useful to resource and conservation managers, biodiversity researchers, taxonomists, amateur collectors, and naturalists.

Montgomery in Europe: Success or Failure? by Richard Lamb

First published in 1983 by Buchan and Enright Publishers Ltd.

World War II 1943-45.

This remarkable study of Montgomery and his campaigns, from Sicily to the German surrender on Lüneburg Heath, provides the most authoritative verdict on a man whose position, character and actions were central to the final defeat of Nazi Germany, but which also brought a fair measure of disaster.

As the author shows, the battles Montgomery fought were not only against the Germans. He struggled with inter-Service rows, political manoeuvring and, worst of all, his treatment of some of the American commanders, including Eisenhower, brought results that were to have a profound effect upon post-war Europe.

Richard Lamb served with the Eighth Army during the Second World War. He was editor of War Monthly from 1978 to 1982, and is the author of two recent books, The Ghosts of Peace 1935-1945 and The Failure of the Eden Government.

At $3.99, this strikes me as low-priced, but I have no idea how long it's been there or will last.

Given the Harvey Weinstein revelations and others up to someone who shall be nameless, Dan Davies's bio of Jimmy Savile seems relevant on this side of the pond also. Reading an account of how the Jack the Ripper murders were covered up by the establishment, I went looking for the prize-winning Davies book for a tale of how much things have not changed in the last century and was pleasantly surprised to see that it's currently cheap.

In Plain Sight: The Life and Lies of Jimmy Savile at Kindle; same price at Kobo.

Imagining Human Rights (publ. by De Gruyter, 2015)

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016GJCFTW...ing=UTF8&psc=1

"Why are human rights considered inviolable norms of justice although more than hundred countries around the globe violate them? This paradox seems reducible to the discrepancy between idealism and reality in humanitarian affairs, but Imagining Human Rights complicates this picture by offering interdisciplinary perspectives on the imaginary status of human rights – on their power and limitation alike."

I just finished this and IMHO its definitely worth reading if you're
interested in the topic and don't mind academic style writing.

Bargain @ $1.99 in the US only from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt's Mariner Books imprint (linkage goes to Kobo, should be the same price at all the regular retailers):

Kant and the Platypus: Essays in Language and Cognition by the late Italian literary novelist and semiotician Umberto Eco (Wikipedia). The last Mariner Eco deal seemed pretty short-lived, so it's probably best not to wait if you think you might want this one.

In Kant and the Platypus, the renowned semiotician, philosopher, and bestselling author of The Name of the Rose and Foucault’s Pendulum explores the question of how much of our perception of things is based on cognitive ability, and how much on linguistic resources.

In six remarkable essays, Umberto Eco explores in depth questions of reality, perception, and experience. Basing his ideas on common sense, Eco shares a vast wealth of literary and historical knowledge, touching on issues that affect us every day. At once philosophical and amusing, Kant and the Platypus is a tour of the world of our senses, told by a master of knowing what is real and what is not.

Bargain @ $1.99 in the US only from HarperCollins (should be the same price in all the stores):

The History of the Hobbit: Mr Baggins and Return to Bag-End by John D. Ratliff & the late J. R. R. Tolkien (Wikipedia), a nice-looking literary work history cum annotated supplement with some behind the scenes making-of and commentary material, including the complete unpublished draft version of the story and many other extras.

A major new examination of how J.R.R.Tolkien came to write his original masterpiece ‘The Hobbit’, including his complete unpublished draft version of the story, and many little-known illustrations and previously unpublished maps by Tolkien himself. For the first time in one volume, The History of the Hobbit presents the complete unpublished text of the original manuscript of J.R.R.Tolkien’s The Hobbit, accompanied by John Rateliff's lively and informative account of how the book came to be written and published. As well as recording the numerous changes made to the story both before and after publication, it examines – chapter-by-chapter – why those changes were made and how they reflect Tolkien's ever-growing concept of Middle-earth.

The Hobbit was first published on 21 September 1937. Like its successor, The Lord of the Rings, it is a story that "grew in the telling", and many characters and story threads in the published text are completely different from what Tolkien first wrote to read aloud to his young sons as part of their "fireside reads". As well as reproducing the original version of one of literature's most famous stories, both on its own merits and as the foundation for The Lord of the Rings, this new book includes many little-known illustrations and previously unpublished maps for The Hobbit by Tolkien himself.

Also featured are extensive annotations and commentaries on the date of composition, how Tolkien's professional and early mythological writings influenced the story, the imaginary geography he created, and how Tolkien came to revise the book years after publication to accommodate events in The Lord of the Rings. Like Christopher Tolkien’s The History of The Lord of the Rings before it, this is a thoughtful yet exhaustive examination of one of the most treasured stories in English literature. Long overdue for a classic book now celebrating 75 years in print, this companion edition offers fascinating new insights for those who have grown up with this enchanting tale, and will delight those who are about to enter Bilbo's round door for the first time.
