PW2 - battery drain after 5.7.3 firmware update

Hello everyone,

Have done some searches here and elsewhere and don't quite know what to make of my battery drain problem. I thought that I was practicing good battery behavior (wifi off, turn off when not using, low light. I read 30 to 60 minutes a day. Prior to the 5.7.3 update I would sometimes forget to turn wifi off and saw no serious battery drain. Prior to the 5.7.3 update I'd get 10 to 14 days or so on a charge. I'd say that I'd recharge when I was at about 20 percent or so.

As far as I know everything is indexed. I have typed in some random nonsense characters to be sure.

My Kindle PW (6th generation) just updated to 5.7.3 three or four days ago. Interestingly, since then I seem to have some issues with the battery draining after only a couple of days. The first time was a day after the update and may have been my fault as I left it in wifi in sleep mode when the battery was at about 33 percent charged. It was prompting me to recharge the battery which I did two nights ago (over night).

I normally leave the kindle off when I am not using it or try to. Kindle was in airplane mode, no wifi. Had only read maybe three or four hours, an hour or so of that at a wifi hotspot where I had wifi on but turned off when I left. Tonight I went to use my kindle and it was again prompting me to recharge. Which I am doing as I write this. Prior to recharging, I restarted the kindle.

I thought that perhaps whispersync might be eating up the battery so I just turned whispersync off. I honestly don't recall if whispersync was on or off before the 5.7.3. update.

Any suggestions appreciated. I'll post back any updates.

It is important that we know the model, since manufacturer's marketing names change and vary depending on the part of the world you bought the device from.

Please use this table and the first 4 (or 6) characters of your serial number to identify your model:
https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Kindle_Serial_Numbers

You can't change your post's title, but you can use the 'report post' button on it and ask a moderator to set the proper prefix.

Note:
The PW-1 (if that is what it turns out to be from the chart) uses the K5 prefix (it made sense at the time it was decided).

It will also help if you tell us what reporting resources the device has, the main one being if it is jail broken.

= = = =

This is a technical forum and your posting about a technical problem, so we really, really need the above technical information with your report.

I.E: Proper context.

Thanks knc1. Sorry for my confusion, and yes I do understand the importance of providing good information. I did what you suggested and found that I have a PW2 and have reported my post and asked the mods to change the title of my post. I will change my profile shortly to reflect that. No, my kindle is not jail broken so no reporting mechanisms. Whisper sync is turned off.

Other oddities after updating to 5.7.3 here, not sure if related. I am sharing below.

Oh and one other thing, I have one of those leather cases from amazon with the magnet in the cover, so if I don't do anything else it goes to sleep when I shut the cover and wakes up again when I open the cover. I usually hold the button down for 7 seconds when I am done using the kindle.

You mention jailbreaking and have read about it here. If there is something that I can do on my end to get reporting mechanisms let me know.

I do know how to plug my kindle in to my Mac and look in the documents folder and I just now looked around to see if their was anything resembling a log file. As you know, there was nothing that I could see. I suspect it is there but I have no access.

One other thing that may or may not be helpful having to do with some oddities after I applied the 7.3.1 update. As this is a tech forum want to give you all possible information. The update was applied on Tuesday when I was at the wifi at my gym and the battery was at about 30 or 40 percent (guesstimate). I use that wifi to sync my kindle and I was expecting this update so was not surprised. As I was leaving the gym and before I shut the wifi off I noticed that "updated" one of my e-books, Ackroyds "Tudors." When it was done updating I turned the wifi off. To make a long story short, I thought I had lost my highlights. After a talk with Amazon support, I checked my whispersync settings and resynched my kindle at a wifi hotspot. I then deleted the Tudor book and loaded the book again. The highlights were back. That was on Tuesday. I did leave whispersync on. I may have left the wifi on by accident, happens sometimes. I read for about 30 minutes before going to bed that night (tuesday) and I thought I powered off (holding button for 7 secs).

Wednesday night went to read, got a message saying I needed to plug in. I did, and read with it plugged in for awhile before shutting down. Thursday connected to wifi again at the gym and later at Starbucks (about 1.5 hours). Other usuage on Thursday. non wifi enabled about 90 minutes. I did notice on Thursday that the battery was draining quicker than normal. Was done to about 50 percent after Starbucks. Last night (Friday) went to read and got the same message saying my battery low and to plug in. I plugged in for a short time. Then unplugged and did a restart, and plugged in again. Checked out a couple of things including turning off whisper sync while it was charging then pushed power button for 7 secs

Thanks to the mods for updating the title. Saw two threads here on jailbreaking and will read and post my questions on those threads. I have a Mac but don't know if the Mac unix is linux compatible.

Thanks again Dr. Drib. I am wondering if this jailbreak: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...postcount=2272 will have something that might help diagnosis my battery drain problem, that is if it continues. You will see that I was asking if the Kindle Touch/PW1/PW2 5.0.x - 5.4.4.2 JailBreak will work on my PW2 with the 5.7.3 update.

Who knows perhaps turning off whispersync will do the trick? Time will tell. If the Kindle Touch/PW1/PW2 5.0.x - 5.4.4.2 JailBreak will work on my PW2 with 5.7.3 and has something that will help (access to log files) do you think I should apply it now or wait. I have some things to do today so depending on how long applying the jail break will take, I may not get around to this until tomorrow or Monday.

Skills and most tools are the same, they are both based on Unix.

A PW-2, now that simplifies the answer, read:
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=271533

Translation:
Update to most recently released Amazon firmware.

Jailbreaking the device:
Your too late once you passed the 5.6.5 version firmware.

It still makes sense, if you consider that we used the major firmware number to identify kindle prefixes (with DX and DXG being minor exceptions, and postfix characters tacked on for special variants). However, amazon has complicated things a bit since then, and some kindle models use even firmware subversions while other related models use odd firmware subversions (at least for awhile).

Now that I am exploring my K1, I wonder why we lack that prefix and Master Index. I may add one when the time comes...

The K5 and PW1 are i.MX50 and newer are i.MX6

The PW1 has been brought into the realm of 5.6.x series, but not the K5.
It can't be the scanner, the KT-2 uses the same IR scanner and it runs a 5.6.x firmware.
For awhile, the PW-1 and the PW-3 both ran 5.6.1.1 - different SoC devices - Duh.

So I'll agree -
Our Nicknaming conventions aren't any more messed up than Amazon/Lab126's numbering conventions.

And just to confuse things, the Kindle Fire uses firmware numbers that overlap the Kindle eink firmware numbering "scheme" (as does the "kindle generation" number overlap). Market and profit-based naming schemes are sometimes devoid of logical reasoning, it seems, to the consternation of software developers who wallow in the WTF-detritus that litters their neural pathways as a result.
