The Black Duchess by Alanna Knight

Magnificent, proud and with a seabird's grace, the pirate ship Black Duchess joins Spain's ‘Most Holy’ Armada.
No less proud, the ship's captain, Don Felipe Flores y Lennox de Montreuse, godson to King Philip of Spain but reared in far-off Scotland beside his English twin-like cousin Amyas Lennox whose face mirrored in his own he would behold through the closing smoke of the sea battle.
Certain of victory he could not foresee defeat, nor the stowaway Maeve O'Neill who would teach him the meaning of love - and loss. Nor the dreaded Isles of Orkney, 'the World's End’, where witches conjured up seal people and starving wreckers under a tyrannical ruler preyed on shipwrecked sailors. As a sole survivor, Don Felipe would meet Lady Sibella Stewart with her dark secret and know murder, betrayal and revenge.

Julius Katz and Archie says it's the second in the Julius Katz series by Dave Zeltserman, although the series order is a little mixed up with a bunch of short stories, one (?) full length book, and maybe (?) a novella or two. (I'm going by memory here while traveling...)

In any case, this series is pretty much what you would imagine - a pastiche of the Nero Wolfe/Archie series by Rex Stout. I've read (I think) all of them, and quite enjoyed them all.

This title is a US Kindle Countdown deal at $0.99 for about the next 2 days.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Julius-Katz-A...dp/B0050VI5OM/

Spoiler:
Quote:
The Julius Katz detective stories have been a favorite among mystery fans since first appearing on the pages of Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine in 2009, winning a Shamus, Derringer, and two Ellery Queen Readers Choice awards. JULIUS KATZ introduced readers to Boston's most brilliant, eccentric, and possibly laziest detective, as well as his sidekick, Archie, a tiny marvel of computer technology with the heart and soul of a hard-boiled PI.

Now in Julius Katz and Archie's first full-length mystery, the stakes have never been higher when a famous Boston mystery writer, Kenneth Kingston, tells Julius he wants to find out who's planning to kill him. The problem is almost everyone in Kingston's life has good reason to want to kill him, and this case soon plunges Julius and Archie deep into the world of murder and publishing.

Shows full price for me at Amazon.com but lucky it's also on Kindle Unlimited -- at least in Canada, anyway.

Amazon UK's Big Deal today are 20 books from the Nancy Drew Files series by "Carolyn Keene" for £0.99 each.

This seems to a small number from the series that were first published 1986-1997, but taken from all over the series, not (say) the first twenty.

He used to be a very popular writer (and still is?).

Which ONE book would you suggest I read first?

-- Thanks!

I've only read a few of his stand-alone novels so far, I think the one I liked best was The Diamond Hunters.

I'll look over that and read a few pages to find out if it appeals to me.
