If this is as good as e ink will ever get, then I can only hope another display tech will supplant it.
I'm pretty sure many of the same people who insist they don't want or need anything better will be first in line to preorder the new improved eink reader when it finally arrives, then declaring they don't need anything better than THAT. I wonder whether they have just hit a wall with e-ink, and they can't improve the tech any more?
Maybe once the price war is over (whenever it is over) they'll start working more on the tech? |

This is what I mean by polemical in the less than constructive sense. Interesting post about TV tech, with a nice parallel drawn between it and consumer tech development in general. Rather unnecessary swipe at DarkScribe in the process, though.

You're the one trying to prove a point, so the burden lies with you. Why should someone who disagrees with you prove that you are right while they are wrong? I could claim that you write your posts in pink underwear, because it makes you feel smarter, but unless I try to back it up, it would be (and should be) labeled as bullshit. Quote:

As far as the lack of output, have you seen any improvements at all? For instance, the PRS-T2 uses the same exact display as the PRS-T1, and the PRS-650. No other display is really available. Why aren't we seeing more Triton displays? Those were unveiled two years ago. Quote:

As far as your example, well, that's not the same. It isn't apples and oranges. A saw and a drill do totally different jobs. If you were talking about people buying fewer routers, because they could get dremel tools, that can do routing. Does the dremel tool do as good of a job? No, because it is a general purpose tool and is designed more for doing many things, so compromises had to be made. Most people are fine with that, because it is so much cheaper, and they just make due. And yeah, many people do complain about eyestrain with reading on LCD. Reading webpages and such is easier, because there is so much to distract the eyes, having them moving around so they don't linger. But, the average person just doesn't read much, and when they do they read for shorter periods of time, so it isn't a big deal. Quote:

Improvement needed
Quote:
The background of E Ink screen is a light grey, often green-tinged color that looks nothing like the creamy whites of the printed page. The text itself is often blurry and lacks vivid definition at small font settings (especially on Kobo displays for some reason). The partial refresh feature causes very noticeable ghosting, and even when it is set to refresh every page, ghosting can still be a problem. I wonder if DarkScribe has considered this point. The new Kindle Touch is a ghosting nightmare. All of these things should be remedied by an update that is sorely needed. |

The danger for me with reading late at night isn't falling asleep, but realizing that I have just a couple of hours before I'm supposed to go to work, and I'm almost at the end of the book that I'm reading. My problem is fixed be reading less captivating books during the week. Yours might be solved with a light switch timer. Quote:

Kobo Glo to feature HD screen
The new line of Kobo readers was recently announced, and the new Kobo Glo (with glow light) will feature an HD screen with a resolution of 1024 x 768.
Is this a sign? Will all the new readers feature HD screens? Read more here, on the-ebook-reader.com |

Kindle goes with higher resolution display
Well, it looks like my predictions were correct. Amazon and Kobo are both finally pushing ahead with higher resolution displays. Here is Amazon's commentary:
"You'll do a double take when you see Kindle Paperwhite—we've added 62% more pixels and increased contrast by 25%, so whites are whiter, and blacks are blacker. We've also added a revolutionary built-in front light for the perfect reading experience whether you're out at the beach or at home in bed." I am quite pleased with this new release. Somehow they have managed to incorporate higher definition screens with glow. I just ordered mine.

It is kind of hilarious though, that they are touting 62% improvement as the main thing, when all they have really done is gone from 800x600 to 1024x768 which my iRiver Story HD has had for a while.
Granted, it is a nice screen and I love reading on it, but Amazon and Kobo do not seem to offer anything that does not already exist (compare it to iPad3 2048x1536 which truly was a shock to the existing display ecosystem). In fact, I imagine that 6" 1024x768 screen is the same across the board of the current e-readers. Only improvement achieved might be in better processor, front light and software. Where are the alternatives to this 6" 1024x768? For those who would like a larger screen size such as 9.7 or maybe even bigger A4(legal) size e-reader, there is little hope. While I am ranting, why is frontlight considered such a big deal? I had no problem reading in low light situations on the reflective TFT Libre and have even less problems on Story HD with just a small light in the bedroom and my eyes are getting pretty old now. I'm still excited
Quote:
I'm hoping Paperwhite will be the screen I have been waiting for. I'm sure they are also factoring in the improved contrast with the glow light on. Between the increased pixel density and the higher resolution screen, we might be surprised. I am slightly worried that they have chosen capacitive touch technology for this device. There must have been some startling advancements since the old (and horrible) Sonys. Try the Onyx Boox M92 for a killer 9.7" E Ink device. |

I looked carefully, and they said "62% more pixels", which is true. It does make the improvement in the display sound better than it really is, though. |

Glow
Right, they are counting in the added contrast between the white glow light and the dark text. I'm wondering how it will look with the light off though.

Hmm, so it is pretty definite that Paperwhite 1024x768 will actually be a different screen type (say Pearl2 ) than existing Pearl 1024x768 screens on M62 and Story HD?
I guess, I am not too discriminating, since I have not noticed that Story HD has a text-to-background contrast problem. Granted, I went from reading on reflective TFT on Aluratek Libre to Story HD screen. |
