Issues validating EPUB for iPad

Getting lots of errors (like the one below) when running the epub created in Calibre through the iTunes Producer for those that want to use the iPad to read the ebook. Thoughts?

ERROR ITMS-9000: "The Husband's Guide to Getting Lucky_split_011.html(106): element "br" from namespace "http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" not allowed in this context" at Book (MZItmspBookPackage)

Look on line 106 of split 11
You have a naked break <br /> (not insid a <p> or <div>

Flightcrew has a lot more informative error message system.
This is NOT a Calibre problem.

Why would you need to run it through a validator in the first place? If you want to read the ePub on your iPad, you can just transfer it via the normal means and read on.

We've gotten response from a few people who have iPads that are looking to buy the book in the iBookstore. What we're selling them is a ZIP file that includes PDF, EPUB, MOBI and the cover image.

I'm sure most of them are able to add the EPUB to their iTunes library, but some just don't understand that you can't buy the ZIP on the iPad without a sync with the computer. Thoughts?

Are you able to edit these "split" files? What I've been doing is editing the original HTML file and converting a new EPUB when attempting to fix the issues seen in iTunes Producer.

If you are selling through the iBookstore maybe you should only deliver the epub format? I did not actually know that the ibookstore would let you deliver a format that could not be loaded directly into iBooks?

You also need to think about the fact that with the imminent release of iOS 5 that people may stop using iTunes altogether and be using iCloud instead. Certainly Apple are going to be promoting solutions that do not require the use of a PC or Mac.

Can you upload an epub file directly into iBookstore and skip the step of using iTunes Producer software? That software is what is blocking me from getting the epub file up and available for iPad readers. We have the epub file working just fine for people on the Nook. Thanks for your input!

Run the ePub through FlightCrew and fix any errors. Then when it says all is well, all is well.

What he says - fix it - and I don't think you can get it into iBookstore except through producer. Producer checks everything before it's put in store. They're not going to make available a book that hasn't been checked.

You can email an ePub or PDF to someone with an iPad and when they open it they're given a choice of which app to open it in. That's the only way I can think of bi-passing the producer software but then you're not in the store. You're better off selling direct wherever you can then you keep all of the sale.

I understand that you need to run it through some validators to check the epub file, but how do you fix the errors they're giving you? Getting errors like the one below.

Use Sigil and delete the "br"

Wow, thanks. Sigil was much easier to figure out what code needed adjusted (and to adjust it) in the ebook for iTunes. Thanks for the suggestion!

How's your table of contents after editing with Sigil? Did the book validate?

The file must validate before you can sell them on iBookstore.
