Why is registration needed before jailbreaking?
Hi
I've read several times that the device has to be registered before to attempt a jailbreak. Is there a technical reason? Could it cause a problem to try to downgrade & then jailbreak a device that has never been registered with amazon? Thanks! |

https://github.com/knc1/KOA2_Jailbreak Scroll down to third section: Recommended. That applies to all touch screen device jail breaks. (Ignore the firmware versions in the first section, one of them is wrong and I haven't had a chance to fix it yet.) Last edited by knc1; 02-27-2018 at 08:15 AM. |

But as it's written in the link above: The registration procedure is only "really" necessary if it's not possible to access the USB storage area and/or the UYK command is not accessible. This is the case for the KOA2 (the link refers to that model only). And (AFAIRC) for very old 5.x PW/Vojage firmwares, where UYK may not be used prior to register the device first.
KOA1, PW3, KT3, KV and other currently selling non-KOA2 devices allow the access to the USB storage right out of the box and have the UYK menu entry. In these cases preregistering is not necessary (and also not to remove parental control etc., as they naturally also can't be set ...). Just copy the factory fw file to the USB root, and then use UYK command. Only if this isn't there, you should register your Kindle with Amazon... |

It gets really hard to explain any rock stable rules.
Even without adding in Amazon/Lab126 not being able to hold any level of build consistency. I have not tested all released firmware versions for all Kindle models. We now know there are regional and country variations. I'll stick with "Recommended". Much easier than trying to sort out all of the exceptions. = = = = That page will become the "template" used in other jail break directions. The file(s) from which it is created are public, anyone can suggest changes and corrections at the repository site (not involving Mobileread). The tools used are all available for Windows, Linux, and MacOSx personal computers. The repository can be updated by anyone with write permission, and the system allows multiple people to have write permission. (and it is all free for our purposes) Last edited by knc1; 02-27-2018 at 09:28 AM. |

OTOH, you surely understand my point: It's generally not a very good idea to use the device online before having it jailbroken.
So the general rule for out-of-the-box Kindles in my point of view is: 1) Skip Wifi setting - leave it in airplane mode. 2) Connect it to a PC via USB. Is the Kindle drive accessible? No ---> Register your Kindle! 3) Copy the appropriate factory build firmware to the root of your Kindle drive. 4) Search for the UYK command. 4a) No UYK present (neither grayed out nor active)? ---> Register your Kindle! 4a) UYK menu entry is visible, but grayed out ---> Not the correct firmware file, or the Kindle is not downgradeable. 5) Do the UYK ... |

That would work also.
Maybe as a link in the directions to a "supplemental" page for those interested? |

Really nice and clear explanations Antinoos - this would indeed do well on the wiki or on any easily accessible page. I agree that if there is no need to connect the device to the internet, it's better to avoid it...
