This year, for the first time in maybe a thousand years, a blue moon falls on New Year's Eve.

Just thought you should know.

thank you dreams ! i only knew the expression "once in a blue moon" to express something rare. i had no idea it was in fact an astronomical event.

Where I live (US Pacific Coast) moonrise is at 1313 with a 21 hour, 27 minute transit. But get this: perigee is January 1, 2010. The moon will be only 224177 miles out! That's about as close as it comes! I'm hoping for clear skies that night.

No, no. The Blood Moon fell was October 3 this year and the moon was almost 20,000 miles further from the earth's surface than the Blue Moon will be, so it was neither as big nor as bright as this year's Blue Moon will be.
