It's simple. People have so little experience with ereaders that they assume any they see is a Kindle. I get "Is that a Kindle?" when they see it, or if I mention I use an ereader, the are "A Kindle?" It doesn't happen often, but it has happened enough that I can tell it is coming.

It was also supposed to be a joke. But, I suspect you now have the same opinion of my sense of humour as my wife

I believe that she was pointing out the apparent typo in the last line of your post.

If that is a joke it doesn't make sense to me either.

I figured you meant the only trouble I have with my KOBO devices are people think they are Kindles.

Um, I was trying to prove the point that everyone just call all ereaders Kindles? :

But, I actually reread the line when I was replying but still didn't see that error. Now I understand the confusion. I've fixed it so that future generations don't get confused.

Purchase a couple of books, trigger a sync and, hot damn, the books are on my Kobo -- no computer or ADE needed. Sync my other Kobo devices, iPhone or Android tablet and they are in my library on those devices. Hmmm... borrow a book from the local library on my Kobo Aura One and sync my other devices and they also have the book.

Perhaps suggesting that your experience with your Sony ereader is the same as those using a Kobo device does not give an accurate picture?

As for other reasons for purchasing from Amazon? I ordered 3 Blu Ray videos during Prime Day with "guaranteed 2 day delivery". Here's it is four days later and I get a notice that my order has finally shipped via Canada Post. Care to make a small side bet on Canada Post getting the parcel to my door today? All this to save $3.60Cdn over purchasing the same videos from elsewhere.

Sorry, I've got no experience with Canada Post. However the way it seems to work in the USA, Shipping is handled by Fed Ex or UPS, and the home delivery is handled by the USPS. I vaguely recall that the smallest packages would be handled solely by USPS.

I don't recall any delays in my recent purchases, and the few times it seemed slow was when the calendar days did not match up with 'business' days. That is, delivery time would span a Sunday or a holiday of some sort. No delivery system, regardless of its efficiency can withstand an assault by a single civil servant!

I wonder how the shipping experience is buying a Kobo ereader from Kobo, vs buy a Kindle ereader from Amazon?

It varies by country.
Buying Kobo in the US requires some "agility".

In the US for Kindle it's always been order and get it in a day or two for Kindle (could do a few hours with Prime Now). For Kobo it took longer (a little over a week IIRC) to receive since they shipped from Canada, but was just as straight forward overall except for the fact that they shipped to to my billing address (requiring a signature) instead of my shipping address.

I ordered my H2O from Chapters. I ordered it on Wednesday and received it on Sunday. I was not expecting a weekend delivery. But, even if I had not gotten it on Sunday, I would have gotten it on Monday. That's very acceptable for such a shipment.

...and if I want to back up the purchases and make them really "mine", I have to install ADE and create an account with Sony. No thank you. With Amazon, there is no middleman required.

I own a Kobo, and I use it. I also occasionally buy books from Kobo, but only if they are DRM free. Yes...I know about the obok plugin, and I've used it. I would probably use it again if the Kobo store were the ONLY place I could get a book. But you will never convince me that buying from Kobo is as seamless as buying from Amazon.

Shari

PS...By the way...if I DID want to use a public library to read books, that works on my Kindle, as well, since I'm in the US. I know that it doesn't work that way in other countries, but then again, Overdrive on Kobo doesn't work in all countries either, does it?

Well, actually you could install Kobo's PC software and get your books that way without ADE being involved (and possibly directly off the device as well, not sure?). Using Kobo for PC along with Obok would be not much different I think than buying from Amazon and using Kindle for PC for downloads (what I do) along with Alf. BTW, I assume you mean make an account with Adobe, not Sony.

No. It works in more countries than just the US, but is limited to certain countries and is limited to you having an Aura One (you can use it on other devices, but only if the account is also set up with an Aura One).
