Rita: The Mystery of a Turkish Bath, v.1, 12 November 2008
The Mystery of a Turkish Bath (1888)
By Rita [Eliza Margaret Jane Gollan], (1850–1938). Produced by Nick Hodson of London, England, for Project Gutenberg. A sensational novelette, set in a ladies’ Turkish bath at an English spa town. Many mysteries are noted (what does an elegant lady wear in a Turkish bath? How might she keep her hair in curl?) but the plot centres on a mysterious, beautiful stranger, who spouts spiritualism, theosophy and the law of karma to the steaming ladies. A tragic tale unfolds… This work is assumed to be in the Life+70 public domain OR the copyright holder has given specific permission for distribution. Hmmm, I assembled this as by Eliza Margaret J Humphreys. I think we have the same book. I'll download yours and check the text.
Don Just checked: It's the same book. I love your cover, by the way. On mine, I used the DJ from the hardback. |

I got mine from Project Gutenberg, which as "Rita" as the author. The Internet archive also has it with the pseudonymous Rita, as does this site:
http://www.athelstane.co.uk/emgollan/turkbath/about.htm which also has some more information about the author. I think it is the source of the other versions too. The lady may well have married and changed her name. |
