I can heartily recommend Ancient Evenings by Norman Mailer (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Ancient-Eve...cient+evenings). Although slow to start, it really immerses you into the culture of the time. Some may find it a bit "literary", but I have read it twice, and it still lingers in my mind today.
"Norman Mailer’s dazzlingly rich, deeply evocative novel of ancient Egypt breathes life into the figures of a lost era: the eighteenth-dynasty Pharaoh Rameses and his wife, Queen Nefertiti; Menenhetet, their creature, lover, and victim; and the gods and mortals that surround them in intimate and telepathic communion. Mailer’s reincarnated protagonist is carried through the exquisite gardens of the royal harem, along the majestic flow of the Nile, and into the terrifying clash of battle. An extraordinary work of inventiveness, Ancient Evenings lives on in the mind long after the last page has been turned." Last edited by ShellShock; 06-12-2016 at 06:47 AM. |

Rameses II ruled in the 19th Dynasty, not the 18th. His wife was Nefertari, not Nefertiti. (Nefertiti was the wife of Akhenaten, who did indeed rule in the 18th Dynasty.) There's nothing I hate more than authors (or publishers) who can't be bothered to get basic facts right . |

I can heartily recommend it (at least the original, I hope the English translation holds up). It is the king of doorstopper novels, though. |

Hi Plumadona
I'd second 'Ancient Evenings' by Norman Mailer. It's a staggeringly good book and, as far as I know, actually quite accurate (the blurb writer might have mixed up some facts). Cheers Ian |

My mom and I enjoyed A God Against the Gods and Return to Thebes, by Allen Drury, both available for Kindle.

I also read and really enjoyed Wilbur Smith's "River God". I never read any of the others in the series though. Sounds like the last few are skippable ...
Not long ago I read "The Sekhmet Bed" by Libbie Hawker, which is about the childhood of Hatshepsut. It was interesting reading, more for the details about ancient Egyptian life than for the plot. |

Late Entries:
The Egyptian, by Mika Waltari, a huge book, set in the Akehnaten era. Originally written in Finnish. The English translation is somewhat shortened but still large. Was a best seller in both languages. Death Comes as the End, Agatha Christie. Set in Thebes in about 2000 BC. |

Another late entry, Out of the Black Land by Kerry Greenwood, is wonderful. And I second the Amelia Peabody novels about an early 20th century amateur Egyptologist, droll romantic fun.

Two very different suggestions:
Mara, Daughter of the Nile by Eloise McGraw - a young adult book set in ancient Egypt. McGraw also wrote The Golden Goblet set in ancient Egypt which won the Newberry Award. The Orbs of Rathira series by Laura Jo Phillips. The series is comprised of linked paranormal romances set on a far off planet with a society based on the Egyptians. |
