Thumbs up Free (Kobo DRM-free) 1 book in Hope Sze series [Montreal Medical Murder Mystery]

As a special thank you bonus for customers trying out their "Going, Going, Gone" contest* (valid in most of Canada, the US & UK) which involves collecting and solving clues from a 3-part novella written by Canadian author Melissa Yi, who is herself an emergency physician, Kobo are offering a free-with-coupon download of your choice of one novel out of her Hope Sze medical murder mysteries featuring a young Ottawa-native Chinese-Canadian doctor working as a first-year resident at a hospital in Montreal, courtesy of publisher Olo Books.

This series has favourable quoted blurb reviews from Publisher's Weekly and Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine, and all the books in it are DRM-free.

In order to get the coupon code for the free ebook, you'll have to add all three parts of the Gone Fishing contest novella to your account (the code may not work without this prerequisite; it's said that the contest itself won't, not that anyone can tell due to the page glitch), and then have a quick skim/search through them to find the code which is tucked within.

(Technically someone could just look up and post the code, but I personally would rather that didn't happen, since if Kobo and the small-press publisher are going to the trouble of doing a free ebook giveaway dependent on downloading some other free stuff, you might as well actually go to the trouble of downloading the other free stuff, rather than potentially discourage them from doing more free ebook giveaways in the future, if they begin to perceive people as openly cheating the system.)

Anyway, the contest is ongoing until October 10th, which is when I suspect the freebie code, which can only be used once in your account, will no longer work (ETA: peachiekene discovered below that the code is valid until the end of the year), so go forth and download and search the promo novella parts @ Going, Going, Gone, and then pick your choice of any of the three novels thus far.

This may or may not be workable outside of the official contest regions, though it would be profoundly ironic if Quebecers couldn't get a freebie set in Montreal.

NB: If the contest page gives you an error for your region, try your luck by adding the novella parts directly from Yi's author page listings @ Kobo if they're available at all.

And this has been the selected 3rd (non-repeat) free ebook thread of the day.

Enjoy!

#1 Code Blues

Dr. Hope Sze rolls into Montreal with three simple goals: 1) survive her family medicine residency, 2) try pain au chocolat, 3) go on a date sometime in the next two years.

Then she discovers a doctor's body in the locker room.

When she tries to uncover his killer, two men dive in to help her.

The one man with charm to burn, the one man who makes her melt, has zero alibi.

Code Blues. Sex, drugs, and doctors.

#2 The Notorious D.O.C

Dr. Hope Sze solved her first murder case a week ago—and almost got strangled in the process. Now the newly notorious "detective doctor" just wants to pass her psychiatry rotation. No more Sherlock Holmes-ing for Hope. Ever.

Until her first psych patient says, "My daughter is dead. And somebody killed her."

Eight years ago, someone ran over that daughter, a young doctor who asked too many questions.

Today, Hope enlists two secret weapons, both of them hot, brilliant, hard-headed males who don't like to share. Then she starts to untangle this cold case.

Before the killer silences Hope, too.

#3 Terminally Ill

Magic? Dr. Hope Sze steers clear of magic.

But when “Elvis the Escape King” chains and nails himself inside a coffin and lowers himself into Montreal’s St. Lawrence River, he can’t break free.

So Hope restarts his heart and saves his life. But now Elvis demands to know who sabotaged his stunt.

Hope hung up her amateur detective badge two months ago in order to tend to cancer patients on palliative care. The only cases she solves right now are case studies on pain and over-stuffed emergency rooms.

Which gets just the tiniest bit boring.

And so Hope plunges into her most unconventional and, possibly, her most terminal adventure yet. Where the magical art of escape and the dastardly art of crime vie for centre stage, and the better man may lose. Forever.

* Ironically, the actual contest does not seem to be enterable, due to an error that requires that you login at the kobo.com site to submit your answers, but upon actually trying to do so, redirects you to the kobobooks.com site, where your login will not be carried back to the original kobo.com site for the purposes of contest entry.

Mind you, this is an improvement over last week's error, where it kept asking for and sending your login/password unencrypted in an endless loop as it rejected it over and over again.

I found the code. Not posting it (the novella parts are free and it's at the end of the 3rd), but it says the code is good until the end of the year.

And thank you for posting this!

They must have updated the file since I downloaded my copy last week, which didn't give a timeframe for the code expiry.

Thanks for taking the time to let everyone know.
