Exclamation msi file not found -error message fix

First of all, DO NOT PANIC!

You're running MS Windows and you noticed you have more than one version of Calibre loaded after you installed an upgrade. Perhaps, the 'msi not found' error popped up while you tried to upgrade.

Another hint might have beern that your desktop has more than one Calibre icon. Then you went to the Control Panel and tried to uninstall the old version manually, and you got the 'msi not found' error.

You probably ran the install from the internet and not off a downloaded file. There's a strong possibility that you (using CCleaner or somesuch) or your computer cleaned out the temp file(s) from which the installation was run.

It's simple to fix. Just be patient and do NOT panic. Do NOT use Calibre from this point until you have followed these instructions:

1. Using Windows Explorer, find and rename your 'Calibre Library' directory to 'First Calibre Library', so you're assured it won't be overwritten and lost (for your peace of mind). If you can't find it, use the search program to find it on your C drive.

2. Go to the Calibre install site and DOWNLOAD (do NOT run it off the internet) the version you are trying to erase, and then run it from your computer. There is an archives that contains previous versions.

3. NOW you can uninstall the old version you just installed.

4. Go to the directory where the renamed subdirectory 'First Calibre Library' is located. If you see a subdirectory named 'Calibre Library' AND one named 'First Calibre Library', ONLY erase the one named 'Calibre Library'.

5. Rename the 'First Calibre Library' subdirectory to 'Calibre Library'.

You have to do this with every version of Calibre where you get this message after you installed off the internet instead of downloading the file. If uninstalling several unwanted versions (just the ones where you get that errror message), you can leave off step 5 until you're all done removing the other ones.

You might see more than one Calibre shortcut on your desktop. Delete the duplicates, if you so desire.

Enjoy your less-cluttered computer.

NEXT TIME, read the directions and don't think you know everything. Like Piet Hein wrote, "Knowing what thou knowest not, is in a sense, Omniscience."

N'est-ce pas?

Thank you for the help.

I have been following the prompt that comes up in Calibre to update and have been downloading from the Calibre site and installing from my downloads folder.

That must have been a one time accident with Build 8.47

Since I'd been upgrading for three months up to that point, it wasn't a matter of not reading the instructions. Occasional accidents happen and you've got to admit the error message didn't give a very good clue as to what had happened. Since the software kept working (until the Google Play update to Kobo Vox), I had no reason to think things had gone poorly on one install back in April.

Anyway, it's fixed now and I've got my library updated.
Thanks.

Wink Most welcome.

Glad I could be of help.

Positive feedback always brightens up my day.

Now...who wants to know how to filter out the adcrap on Google when you access it AND while using it, INCLUDING the blue strip at the top and the Chrome download solicitation?

Oops - wrong forum! <wink>
