TINSTAAFL - if Kindles were free everyone would get one for themselves, their dog, cat and canary and their long dead great aunties. Most of them would end up in a drawer, cupboard, or a cardboard box in the attic - as they do now. And who will bear the costs, people who buy stuff from Amazon, that's who. I.E. the costs would be socialised, whilst the profits that flow into Amazon stockholders pockets would be diminished not one brass razoo.

Really, you are certain that millions of devices would have zero purchases but seriously look at the Amazon ebook prices now, no bargain compared to Google or Apple, OK they can keep the device prices as is but why not allow the buyer 50 ebooks free, the point is they make cheap Fire Tablets because they want you in their ecosystem buying things, they will ultimately get the better end of the deal and you are stuck with a locked and at times inferior product.

Can anyone tell me whether it's better to upload a mobi or awz file (as an author) to Amazon? I have stuck with mobi because it's been the longest supported and most supported, but Amazon is pushing me to use the latest format...I'll probably have no choice eventually, but if anyone has a preference/reason for mobi/etc, let me know. I also sell my books on my website/blog--and I've stuck with mobi for the same reason, thinking it's the most portable (files don't have DRM, but I'm always worried newer kindles won't allow side loading or won't support older file types. Trying to keep up.)
Thanks.

They display just fine. This is Kindle for Mac 1.17.1 (44182), Mac OS X 10.12.2.
Some are working, some are not, thanks for checking it out on your Mac. I drag the book from Calibre app to Kindle app, at this point I will stick to Ibooks as it is a cleaner interface, it would be perfect if Moonreader worked on a Mac but this is fine for now.

@BMB If your books dont require any of the advanced formatting of AZW3, stay with MOBI as long as Amazon lets you, why change something that works?

that's always been my thought! There will probably come a day when they tell me it's going away, but I hope that's a long time off yet!!! Thanks, Kovid--for all you do for us!
