I got SlowSmile's plugin. A lot there. I'm going slow (no pun intended) but so far this thing looks amazing. I'm sure I'll still have some questions. (I always have questions.) But yeah, this thing looks exciting and powerful. Thanks for nudging me (kicking me in the pants?) to get it.

It's easy-peasy. Does everything. Sorry for being...too short, but you'll be happier with the result.

I'm experimenting with it now, Hitch. It's impressive. I'm still a little wary of all the "Cleanup Options" choices, except of course "Reformat smaller ebook images to help preserve image size."

From my experimenting (and again, I haven't seen results except in Sigil's "View" and Calibre's ebook Viewer) on the backmatter images, it would make sense to go with a really big image (reduce it percentage-wise--mabye to 85%--in GIMP first so the file size doesn't bloat) and then set the % to 33%. That way on small screens the image would be reduced and on big screens it wouldn't be tiny.

Something like:

<img alt="OopsANavy1800X2700" src="../Images/OopsANavy1800X2700.jpg" style="width: 33%;height: auto;"/>

What do you think? What image size and % do you think is optimal?

I don't think I'll use the plugin on my current books (I'm not up for proofreading them again) but I will change the backmatter images--run the plug-in on a copy and then enter the HTML for the backmatter images on the original--and I'm definitely going to use it with my new books when I open the .html in Sigil.

You really oughtn't to have to reproof them, just for using a plugin from William.

Secondly, ask William for help.He loves helping newbs, he does. He LOVES showing off his plugins. I'm not being sarcastic.

The plugin--all you do is put your image in, set the %, and the plugin tells the KF7 how to display the file on older devices, in pixels. Honest to crap, Gregg, it's easy.

In terms of the display...Uh..firstly, 1800x2700 for a thumbnail is godawful big. Unless you WANT to pay delivery fees you don't need to, make that more like...300px wide, at most. Then set it to whatever dang percentage you like, like...25% of the width of the screen, or whatever blows your skirt up.

OK?

Thanks Hitch. Still a few questions.

#1) Just for example's sake, if (I won't) I ran the 1800X2700 at 75% would the KF7 devices show a reduced image so that it fits the screen?

#2) Can I do what I was thinking of doing (running SlowSmile's plugin on a copy of my original file, then copying and pasting the backmatter cover HTML into the original)? Will that work or does the whole file need to be run through the plugin?

#3) Okay, 300 width. (On my 1:5 ratio of my images that would be 300X450.) And say I set the percentage at 75% (although when you run the plugin, percentages are automatically assigned based on image size). So the image looks great on my Kindle Touch. But won't it be hugely stretched on the biggest screens?

If that's the case, then a bigger image or reduced %, or both, should be used, right?

Well, when you say, would they show a reduced image, no--it would be full-screen, like a regular book cover. 1800x2700 is huge, bigger than most Kindle screens.

Yes, you can do that absolutely. The plugin has specific functions. It will do those on your copy, and then yes, you can take that HTML file and paste it over what you have in the original (make sure you get the CSS!)

Nope. It should look fine. I mean...MAYBE it might look a bit odd on a Fire 10", in landscape mode, but it should be perfectly fine on everything else, I should think.

I'm trying to save you delivery fees. If you're really worried, use a 500px wide cover instead. I recommend you try it with the 300px wide, and see how it looks.

Thanks Hitch. Very helpful stuff. I tested an 800X1200 image (of a backmatter cover) at 75% and I'd say it took up a good two thirds of the screen.

But the plugin doesn't change the CSS. It just removes any CSS that's not being used, right? It doesn't add anything. And nothing in my CSS pertains to my backmatter images.

Yeah, that's good advice. I will.

I just ran a test on an actual book with SlowSmile's stuff. (And I didn't do anything to the CSS.) Well, KDP did some minor funky stuff (showing two identical images in slightly different sizes), but the 200X300 images at 33% looked small in my Kindle Touch 7 but not tiny (as they had before with I included the "width" and "height" stuff in the HTML tags). And it looks fine in my Kindle HD 8. (And I noticed that the landscape mode does not follow the % specified. For instance on one image I had 50% specified and that's the way it looked on portrait--and I was expecting it to be blurry and stretched in landscape--but in landscape it was bigger but only took up about a third of the screen.)

I ran a 300X450 image at 75% and that was clean and sharp but it seemed too big on the Kindle and the HD 8 tablet.

One image I ran at 800X1200 at 75% and it took up nearly identical screen space as the 300X450 at 75%.

<head shake>

And also kind of confusing. When I downloaded the KF8 (.azw3) and sideloaded it to my Kindle, the images still followed the % stuff in there. Is that because my Kindle 7 is too new? (The KF8 stuff is for really old Kindles?)

Anyway, yeah, I'm going to run another test with the 300X450 and different size images and some using SlowSmile and some using the "width" and "height" stuff (it seems like that should be in there. That's what the CSS School says anyway). And I'll report back.

Hi Hitch. Okay, here are the results. (And I posted them to SlowSmile in the Plugin forum too.)

OOPS-A-NAVY (...15): <img alt="OopsANavy200X300" height="300" src="../Images/OopsANavy200X300.jpg" width="200"/>

DUPES-A-NAVY (...51): <img alt="DupesANavyFinal200X300" src="../Images/DupesANavyFinal200X300.jpg" style="width: 33%;height: auto;"/>

RISE OF THE ANIMAL RESCUE FEMINISTS (...19) <img alt="RiseFinal300X45095pct" src="../Images/RiseFinal300X450X95pct.jpg" style="width: 33%;height: auto;"/>

I LOVE YOU I KILL YOU (...48) <img alt="ILoveYouIKillYou300X450X95pct" height="300" src="../Images/ILoveYouIKillYou300X450X95pct.jpg" width="200"/>

BLOODY SUNRISE (...06) <img alt="BloodySunriseFinal400X600" height="600" src="../Images/BloodySunriseFinal400X600X90pct.jpg" width="400"/>

SAVING BABY (...24) <img alt="Saving-Baby_ebook400X600X90pct" src="../Images/Saving-Baby_ebook400X600X90pct.jpg" style="width: 33%;height: auto;"/>

THE FIND (...41) <img alt="TheFindNew300X450" src="../Images/TheFindNew300X450X95pct.jpg" style="width: 50%;height: auto;"/>

MAN OF GOD (...02) <img alt="ManOfGodNewFinal250X375" src="../Images/ManOfGodNewFinal250X375.jpg" style="width: 33%;height: auto;"/>

As you can see, some are the plugin version HTML and some the regular. I think BLOODY SUNRISE and THE FIND look the best. I kind of like that THE FIND is 300X450, which is what you suggested before. What do you think?

And I looked pretty closely at what the plugin does. It didn't change any of the text (the only option I chose was this: 'Reformat ebook images using percentage screen values to help normalize smaller image sizes across all ereaders.') but it did add some stuff in the formatting (switching out <i> tags for <span style="font-style: italic;" tags> and some other stuff like that.) It changed my asterisks. And the <i> tag replacement was inconsistent. It would make the replacement on the first italic in the paragraph but then not any of the remaining italics in the paragraph (they remained <i> tags).

And I don't need to run the plugin to use that HTML for the backmatter covers, right?

Thanks!

The plugin wouldn't change any of your text. What it SHOULD do, though, if you have your images in the HTML file, set to be X% of the screen, is recreate the HTML for the KF7 version of the images. I'm not seeing that here, or I'm a bit whacky. Gregg, when you can, send me a dupe of the file that you're working on, okay?

Did you try putting the covers in, each with their own HTML call, each set to the %, and then run the plugin? I'm talking about that specific plugin for creating the KF7 media queries, NOT slowsmile's cleanup plugin or any others. Right?

I didn't know there was a media queries plug-in. I'd just been dealing with his Custom Cleaner Plus.

And I just put the HTML stuff for the covers by copying and pasting. Which is what I did for the new file that I'm sending you too. (I was leery of some of the changes that were occurring when I ran the Cleaner on the whole file.) (BTW all those backmatter covers from the new file--the one I'm sending you--look great on my HD8 Fire Tablet and my Kindle Touch 7.) (And what do you mean by HTML "call"?)

I'll run that media queries plugin on the file I'm sending you.

Thanks.

I don't know why this has derailed to the customcleaner plugin. I was never discussing that. I was speaking ONLY about the image processing plugin, whatever the name is.

ETA: THIS is the plugin that I have been talking about, all along: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=289672 . This is the one that slowsmile was discussing, in the thread to which I linked you. I don't know why we are talking about the cleaner plugin; no wonder this thread is making less and less sense to me.

Are we talking about the bloody images, or something ELSE?

Hitch
