My son went for a folding Samsung phone and gave up on it after 5 weeks. He just couldn't look past the crease when reading something that used both sides of the display. His experience seems to be fairly typical of what I have seen posted by people who purchased folding devices. |

Its an interesting concept specifically for ereaders. I would dare to speculate that since e-ink is so dramatically more power efficient compared to conventional displays that a larger folding device like this might be able to reach even longer battery life that non-folding models. That's more space to store a larger battery cell, or a second one.

And the Mooink V press release refers to both the Mooink V and Mooink Pro devices as e-paper tablets going by the translation from traditional Chinese.

Two eReaders with duck-tape and a BT clicker that advances two pages at a time is the comparative cost.
I'm tempted to try with two PW3 or two Libra or two Sage (I have those). MS once considered a book-like hinged tablet (two screens). Also there is some of the Nintento handhelds. |

I just don't understand the real-world use case for a folding ereader. How is it superior to a single-panel ereader? What does it do better?

I actually think the marketing pitch was very honest - it's for people who REALLY want to pretend they're reading a "real" book, one that has a permanent crease down the midlle with text on either side. All they need to do now is include a sachet of vanillin aersol with each purhase and thos "real book" people will be ecstatic

Maybe some people would like it since it may protect the screen when folded. |

Although I personally am not interested in a folding model (nor in Gallery 3, as I prefer Kaleido 3 for my use of colour), I imagine that the interest lies in the size once folded. An 8" e-reader, which I usually use in 2-column mode, does not have the same portability as a folded 8" device (I suppose that the folding will be less annoying if used in 2-column mode than in single-column mode, but that will depend on what you use it for and the user's sensibility). In any case, beyond my personal taste, I think it's good that there are different models and that people can choose the one they are most interested in. The greater the variety, the better.

Right, but I don't want or need multicolumn.
I don't see the utility of it unless flipping pages is arduous. So the thing to do is make flipping pages easier. That may be buttons on the device or air or screen gestures or accelerometer or a remote. One could pursue this ad absurdum. Why not a device with a screen 6 inches wide and 1 inch high? Ok, you'd have to flip much more often. Or why not a screen that scrolls continuously and checks its speed by eye tracking? |

Many reading programs incorporate a multi-column mode, I suppose because there are people who like it and find it useful for them (there was even a patch for Kobo that allowed up to 3 columns). I like to read with two columns on my 8" and 10" e-readers, just as some people prefer to read in landscape mode without any columns regardless of the size of the reader. Everyone has their own personal preferences. And I assume that whoever buys this folding e-reader, however they use it, will find some kind of use for it.
