In an ancient ritual (which actually existed well into the 19th century), sin eaters eat and take on the sins of others confessed on their death beds, allowing them to enter the kingdom of heaven, whilst the sin eater carries the burden of sin silently to their grave. This dark tale relates the story of just such a ritual meal and its outcome.

William Sharp (12 September 1855 – 12 December 1905) was a Scottish writer, of poetry and literary biography in particular, who from 1893 wrote also as Fiona Macleod, a pseudonym kept almost entirely secret during his lifetime. Although perhaps best known for his poetry, under the MacLeod pseudonym he wrote a substantial number of stories and novels grounded in Celtic folklore and touched with the supernatural.
