I'm also getting the error when trying to vacuum notes.

Is there a way to Show a category note other than by clicking the pencil in book details.

In dark mode the tick in the category editor is a bit dim, be better of it was bright like the one for "Only show…" above it.

You can right-click an item in book detials, context menu there.

When I start up. The slash is normal, then there is a White Window (smaller than the Library view to come, but in a larger Black box): Then the Library.

Is this the content server starting, but really lots slower than before?
The server runs fast, when logged in from another PC

the server doesnt use any form of GUI. Easy enough to test by temporarily disabling it. This will likely be something changing in Qt.

I will take this back: I just noticed 6.29 did this (Just quicker. on a I7 )

If you run calibre as

calibre-debug -g

from windows command prompt, you will get startup timings printed to console. For me the timings are within 0.04 seconds of each other for 6.99 and 6.29

True, if I pop a detached BD I can tab to the pencil I want, then press Enter to pop the Show note window, but when I close that window, focus returns to the Book list, rather than the detached BD window.

The Show note window won't Tab into the Close button, cycles through Edit, Find…, Copy… and back to Edit. Have to hit Escape.

That seems to be a bit of Qt weirdness. There's nothing special about the close button in calibre code.

My 6.99 timings were not terrible

That's an error from the apnx generator plugin it needs to be ported to python 3.11

I'm not seeing a delay opening Manage Authors from the tag browser on either my Intake or Main libraries. The Main library has ~14,500 books.

I can confirm getting the same error message when attempting to compact the notes database. OTOH, I haven't created any notes so may be an attempt to compact the non-existent.

Edit: After reading a few messages on, the vacuum issue is already fixed. An hour late and a dollar short.

no worries, the Esc key is all of 3cm from the Tab

Be good to have the Close return to the BD window though, after returning to the Book list there's no keyboard way to get back to the BD window, pressing 'I' again does nothing.

Unsure if this is intended, or desirable - I can pop multiple Show note windows for the same item - and Edit each of them and end up with a combined edit… i.e. no harm done, but why would I wanna do that .
